Depending on size and shape you can do this in the microwave over a jug of water. Just be careful when u take it out!!

I think some felting needles would be quicker too. But a good idea to create holes. I don't know why synthetic fibers should cause trouble. When I used nylon shears to cover my felt they always tried to attach to my work. An embellisher would be ideal I'd guess BUT that or felting needles by hand could end up chewing up the fabric because of the barbs!

I've got an absolutely basic Brother - cost £120 new a few years ago, and for free machine embroidery it does all I need it to, but the one thing it won't deal with is VERY heavy fabric. Fine with felt and leather - but wouldn't cope with say slipper thickness. It's fine provided I remember to clean/oil it!! Have heard lots of good things about Berninas though ...and they might be better 'work horses' and less fuss and bother to keep happy!

My mum used to be uk size 18 before losing weight. She accidentally felted a cashmere sweater. It would now fit a four year old! It shrinks A LOT, as Koffipot says!

I could do a post about the IFA Conference/workshops if you like? It was fab. 😃

Thanks Ruth - that's really useful. It'll just be one hat but doubling it to give myself some choice is definitely a good idea.

Silly question in its way, I know - depends on the size and shape of the hat and how much sculpting one wants to do, but I'm attending a workshop to make a sculpted hat (no further info) and we've been told to have merino in different colors and thicknesses but no indication of how much! I tried asking the tutor directly (it's an IFA Conference day so it's not organised directly through her) but I fear my email has disappeared into the ether ... so any advice on ROUGH quantities would be very helpful. I know we have at least one hat expert on the forum in Terri!
Thanks in advance!
Anne

I THINK it was on this forum, and recently, someone posted a very interesting article in Spanish about feather weaving - possibly from Oaxaca museum? I thought, 'Great, I'll use that for some Spanish translation in my next lesson'. The problem is I then promptly forgot about it and now I can't find it. Can anyone point me at the right thread?
Thanks!
Anne

Love them both, Tracey and Jifke. I too hate adding zips but they are so useful! The last bag I made had the zipper inserted and taken out three times before I was happy with it!

Thanks everyone - and duh, it's already got a sleeve (just no dowel in it as yet) so Ann, that's a most excellent idea! Thanks again Tracey...will try to post another photo soon with just two ribbons and a dowel in the sleeve! (It has a sleeve because I'm going to exhibit it in an IFA exhibition, but its driftwood can't accompany it as it is too long - they have a strict size restriction!)

With Tracey's driftwood by Anne Hickley, on Flickr At last I have hung the picture, using Tracey's driftwood - but I will rehang it with some better coloured ribbon or possibly invisible thread, some point soon. I think I'll be very happy with it ...eventually ...but right now I don't like that black ribbon. It's very fine organza ribbon and I hoped it would look suitably flimsy and kind of blend with the wall ... but it doesn't! I like the way the picture and the driftwood look though, so it's just getting the bit in between right now! Thanks again, Tracey!
