Silly question in its way, I know - depends on the size and shape of the hat and how much sculpting one wants to do, but I'm attending a workshop to make a sculpted hat (no further info) and we've been told to have merino in different colors and thicknesses but no indication of how much! I tried asking the tutor directly (it's an IFA Conference day so it's not organised directly through her) but I fear my email has disappeared into the ether ... so any advice on ROUGH quantities would be very helpful. I know we have at least one hat expert on the forum in Terri!
Thanks in advance!
Anne

Teri is busy teaching an online class right now so she might not pop in. She did say that her hats (concertina ones) weighed roughly between 6-8 ounces each. Are you just making one hat? I would maybe double that amount if you're making one hat thus giving yourself choices if you use a variety of colors.

Thanks Ruth - that's really useful. It'll just be one hat but doubling it to give myself some choice is definitely a good idea.

When I teach hats. nothing to complicated I use 100grams. so if you double it you should have more than enough with some left to make a matching scarf.

I also use 100 grams for a beret using merino. but also made a hat of sheepswool and it was 200 grams. it just depends on how many layers she advises and also what youself already said. show us the hat when ready ?

I used about 150g but I was a bit heavy handed! Choice was a good idea as I'd thought purple and it ended up green! Can't send a pic via the iPad but will try later from the PC! I'm very happy with it!

Thank you Tracey. Me too re simplicity. There were other styles we could make, more complex but didn't suit me. This one did. 😊

It's a lovely style and colour and so well made - all that hard work will be rewarded when you get the compliments when you're wearing it.
