Spinning on a wheel is a bit trickier than I thought. I watched Richard Ashford's video and he makes it look sooooo easy. NOT.

While I've been busy weaving for the past year, I also just purchased a traditional Ashford spinning wheel as a 94th birthday gift for my mom. The trick is learning how to do the basic spinning so I can teach my mom. She still has all her faculties and plays bridge 2-3 times a week. As you can imagine, she has lost many bridge partners over the years, and I think it's high time she start a new hobby.
The lady who sold me the used Ashford suggested only treadling for a week to get the feel of the wheel. No spinning guilds or classes nearby, and anyway my Mom can't drive any longer. Obviously, I have plenty of roving.
What next?

Wow! I really adore the colors and boldness of your art work! You might consider lashing it to a blank canvas, either painted or not. In the past, I have sometimes used a cloth backing, and sometimes not. Just depends on the piece. Looking forward to seeing your embellishments!

Carole, your weaving is beautiful and the colors FABU-licious! What kind of loom did you weave on? I have also struggled with snapping and tangling warp threads but always manage to come back stronger!

So feeling sorry for your job loss, Elizabeth. Sometimes life really sucks!
In the meantime, cats are very comforting, I agree. And you will snap out of it sooner than it seems possible.

So happy my Christmas greetings finally arrived, Nada! You are right about the angelina on the card. Enjoy the fibers and the holiday. I love that we are able to connect through our love of fibers!
I have enjoyed seeing what everyone has made this year.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Nada, I really hope you have my card early next week! There's no rhyme or reason with postal service. Recently I received something from Sweden and it took THREE weeks to get here!

Nada's card arrived yesterday...what a delight! The gold mesh on the oversized tree gives a lovely glow. Chicago's low light does not do it justice! flic.kr/p/Q86ZPx

They do have a "molded" look about them, and I am wondering if they were shaped that way using a shoe last. Very nice design!

I think it's nice to have a real photo, even if dated. Having said that, then why am I still using my wet-felted self-portrait?

I've used alpaca as prepared roving mixed with other wools and found it quite easy to felt, so perhaps the key is to blend the roving first into batts (mixed alpaca, sheep, Huacaya) and then proceed to wet felt.
