Thanks, koffipot. Although I did not visit Nagasaki whilst in Japan a few years ago, I do remember reading about the history you describe. And yes, the horrific photos of Christian martyrs.

Thanks Ruth & Ann. BTW, Ann--I almost included Mt. Fuji in my piece but didn't--so it's waiting for you!

nuno felt abstract by catwycliff, on Flickr I chose to nuno-felt an abstract design for the 3rd Qtr Challenge. This artwork depicts Japan's policy of isolationism during the Edo Period. Silk scraps nuno-felted on white wool batt with hand-embroidery embellishment,

Great depiction of the red-headed crane! You show commendable skill with the free-motion embroidery.

Looking forward to seeing photos of the cat caves! I do remember making a cat cave and how heavy it was when wet. To boot, my cats pretty much ignored their new home.

Tracey, I see that Marilyn included her tip for you. Only thing I can add about pods is that the 3-D process was so much more challenging for me than using flat felt. Marilyn modeled the process for me as we made our pods side by side. That really helped!

Thanks, Wildnwooly. Never heard that one and absolutely willing to give commercial yarn a try. I definitely need more practice in getting feet and hands coordinated. Fortunately, two of my sibs are knitters so I have commercial yarn at hand.
Koffipot, yes, the flickr photo shows that Romney yarn. I've a long way to go to match your beautiful hand spun!

Must admit, I finally succeeded with small pods after using Lyn's terrific tutorial and a bit of guidance from Marilyn. Love making pods!!!

Great tips, all, and thanks!
I finally did arrange a visit with a long-time spinner, a friend of Marilyn's (Pandagirl). It was an hour and a half away by car, but it was so worth it! This lovely lady sat me down with my vintage Ashford trad and made a few adjustments and tweaks to the wheel. Tension was wrong, needed a new leader and a washer (who knew?) Then she modeled proper drafting and spinning. She also gave me some Romney fleece, which was cleaned but not smooth like top. It was very easy to draft in that format. I now have a spool of beginner's uneven yarn with lots of corkscrews. My handle chould be "kinkyspinner" but I don't want folks to get the wrong idea.
Koffipot, I will take a good look at Sue MacNiven.

Welcome, Trish! My son lives outside of Houston and LOVES TEXAS even though he was born and raised in Chicago!! I don't know much about the fiber community in your area, but willing to guess you will find something. Good luck!

Cotton wool is actually a misnomer, since Boots' ad for cotton wool clearly states it is 100% cotton. Bits of cotton stalk and seed may be present.

Pascal, that's the first time I heard about using unwashed sheep's wool. I've been using nice merino roving or sliver. I will give that a try...thinking about it--it makes sense! Thanks for the tip.

Spinning has not yet clicked for me, but I still have about 4 weeks until my Mom's birthday. Thanks for the tips!
