I needle felt a bit of wool around a practice golf ball with a bead in it (like a whiffle ball) and then put the wool covered balls in a stocking and tie it shut. I usually get 18 balls per pair of panty hose. Then I throw them in the washing machine with a load of towels or jeans. They felt to the stocking a bit, but I just peel that off, do a small amount of needling of any loose fiber and they are good to go. I re-use the panty hose until the holes are too big.

Do you need to use any special soap when wet felting?

Judy - you can use any kind you want. Lots of people use olive oil soap but it isn't necessary. Just something that will be kind to your hands.
Pam - I'm sure I'm not.

I do the nylon thing with mine but they are all wool. I let them go through the dryer as well. I needle a picture on and then put them through the washer again to make sure it’s good and attached. I have done plain ones with a Styrofoam ball and bell. They don't sell as well. I don't think I have a cheap (including the shipping) source of the cool balls Ruth uses.

Ann - I bought 96 dozen of the silly things from somewhere I found online. I did that several years ago and I'm almost out.

I've done a simple tutorial on making felted soaps - it's in this month's craft mag - but I've only got it as a word doc. If anyone wants a copy I can email it. (I've got your address Zed so I'll send one now.)

I always put mine in a stocking to hold the wool in place otherwise it slips around everywhere.

yep I put mine in a nylon too. When the wool grows when it gets wet it hard to handle. they nylon keeps everything under control.

I'm going to look for oval soaps today to try your tutorial, Lyn. I have netting and also a box of pop socks that I must have bought for soaps or vessels, so I can try both

If you can't find oval soap just use a potato peeler to take the sharp edges of a rectangular one.
