Crystal sea salt? Sounds interesting. How do you use it and what effects does it produce?

You can also buy salts for dyeing Nada, but I think Kosher or coarse salt would so work as well. It creates a burst effect when added to wet dye.

Nada, it is large grains of salt - it is made naturally here, leaving puddles of sea water to dry in the heat of summer. When you sprinkle some onto wet painted silk you get interesting textures - a bit like marble, as the salt draws in the paint or dye. You leave it til its dry, then it brushes off. Ordinary table salt does the same, but smaller. Another one for you to play with!

I enjoyed viewing your scarves and they are really quite lovely. Have never painted silk but now would like to give it a try sometime.

Jill, the scarf is gorgeous!! Your flowers are pretty, too. I watched the video and she makes it look quite 'fiddly'. Have you tried laying the fabric over the cups and THEN wetting it down?

Good plan, Elizabeth! Didn't try that. although I find it quicker & easier than it looks in the vid. it's just plastic cups, after all! & better not too symmetrically placed, in my opinion.

Nada, I watched all 4 of those videos and, being impatient, I thought she could have shown it all in about one or two. She really struggled with the wet silk to get it over the cups and draped. I thought that it might be easier to drape it over the cups and THEN wet it. The technique is interesting. In my pack of stuff to be 'rehomed' I have a lot of bottles of re-inkers for stamp pads. I think I'll pull them out and see what happens if I put them on silk and then heat it. I was going to give them away, so no loss.

Is it permanent ink Elizabeth?

I think most of it is. I have a bunch. I know some is 'Stayzon'. Of course it could be all dried up. I haven't dug into that pile of stuff yet

It should work if it is permanent and not all dried up!

Elizabeth, there are vids on youtube for using Sharpies/magic markers on silk, they might be helpful if you already know about inks etc.

Dropped some things off at the thrift store today and picked up two little scarves more like silk ties you would put under you collar and tie in a bow (reminded me of being in the Corporate world when I used to wear blouses and suits to work) and an old soft cotton hankie (I have a collection of hankies). Spent a whopping $1.50!!!
Also Garden Club Meeting today with a speaker on making Mass Designs and then a friend came over and I shared some plants from the garden. So 4 out of 4 is a good day - Friends, Floral Designs, Gardening, Shopping for felting supplies.
