I prefer to make several thinner layers because I find it easier to make 'even' felt that way. I do thin layers as well, more thin layers being better than a few thick ones. But is 2 or 3 thin layers over a large area and shrinking more, better than 4-6 thin layers over a smaller area and not shrinking as much, thicker wool shrinking less then thinner wool.
Part of my wondering comes from always hearing about the huge starting size and massive shrinkage some of the East European felters get. Then I saw the video and thought maybe this huge thin layout is why they can achieve it. I am sure you've seen it; a coat layout that is the length of an 8 foot or longer table but ends up as a short jacket

some back ground. I was watching a quick video of someone making a bag as part of an add for a class. It looked like she got well over 50% shrinkage. but as I was watching I thought but the layout was pretty thin.
Then I started wondering about layout. is it better to use 4 layers and 33-50% shrinkage or use the same amount of wool in 2 layers and layout much bigger and have 60-70% shrinkage. It's the same amount of wool and the same finished size.
Any opinions is thinner, bigger and more shrinkage better than thicker, smaller and less shrinkage?

looks like you found a great solution for the stool cover. It looks perfect in place.

Fulling is shrinking and strengthening felt. So, you start out with gentle fulling and gradually use more force. Fulling too hard and too fast doesn't give the fibres a chance to move through the fabric and tangle together well.

Sorry for the size but it won't let me make it smaller.

How about making a square the same size as the top and velcro it to the top? Then you could change the top to match the season, mood or whenever you like. Whenever it gets dirty you could easily wash it.
Ann, I like the "me cover".

I would suggest a local spinning guild as a good resource. they often have equipment and workshops on how to use them. If there are none of those nearby then maybe a local historical society or reenactor group. They often have sinners in their groups.

Thanks, ladies. The hearts and ropes are drying. I thought maybe some ribbon would work too if they don't like the felt handles.

I am doing a short class for valentines day. A heart basket/bag. Just small, maybe 6 inches across. I can't decide on the handles. at first i thought a flat handle made as part of the heart. Then thought maybe a round "snake" handle attached form the start. Now i am thinking about making a snake handle added after through holes as being the easiest for students in a short class. I need to make a sample so the is a picture for the class.
What would you suggest?
Ann

Yep, I was going to say it's a scam, don't do it. Proceed with extreme caution.
