Shana, sometimes I spin from the dirt with alpaca and the grease with sheep fleece, which means no washing and no carding, a bit of teasing with your fingers and off you go, it's fun to try out different approaches, so I wouldn't worry about your old carder, can't wait to see your first yarn :-)

When I started out Shana, I found merino really difficult to spin, so I teethed on shetland wool, the only other advice I have is if you want perfect the shops are full of that, and people pay a fortune for art yarn!! the thick/thin yarn we all start out doing - the other piece of advice someone gave me was keep your first skein/ball of wool and see how you develop :-) good luck I am sure you will be completely hooked :-) if you have carders you can mix up fibres to make something easier to spin.

Happy New Year everyone, stunning photo Ruth, it reminds me of this Celtic blessing for Hogmanay
May you go forth under the strength of heaven, under the light of sun, under the radiance of moon; May you go forth with the splendor of fire, with the speed of lightning, with the swiftness of wind; May you go forth supported by the depth of sea, by the stability of earth, by the firmness of rock; May you be surrounded and encircled, with the protection of the nine elements.
And may the force of creativity be with you in 2018

I'm with your hubby I really like the clasped weft on one sleeve, the reason being it draws the eye and then it links to the collar area - I love it.

That is beautiful Judith, did you use a pattern? what I mean is your own or a bought one.
I love the high neck and the detail mirrored on the shoulder and all your own handspun - in awe :-)

It looks gorgeous! How do you knot onto the warp? When you say 'unworked', is it still raw, or just cleaned? Hi Zed, yes it is washed but that's all, a bundle of Shetland fibres, so what I did was weave about 6 rows in handspun Shetland, then took about 4 locks and laid them over 4 warp threads and put the ends around the back of the outer warps and pulled them up through the middle so there were two warps wrapped by each end of the lock - if that makes sense!!! then I did a second row but used four warps again but alternated them abit like brick work with the row below, then back to 6 woven rows - a slow job but I quite enjoyed the zen bit of it :-)

This all started when I went to Dornoch (the North of Scotland) to the Woolfest and came away with an award-winning Shetland fleece. Over the summer it was washed and dried, and then a little bit of spinning for weaving, the rest is unworked fleece that I teased the locks out of, and then knotted on to the warp to make a rug with rows of handspun in between (you can see this on the back of the rug) - I hope you like it it's been a fun project.

My December fiberness is taken me down the road of needle felting into a bought cardigan. I think it's finished!! it's one of those projects that can go on and on, but I may add one little blue flower on the opposite shoulder for balance. The flowers you see on the left go over the shoulder and down the back a little way.
