Being inspired by Zara's gorgeous wrist warmers just wonder how you deal with fastening? If it's just a button what about a button hole? How to make it so that it stays firm when wear? I do not make much of wearables so any ideas are very welcome !

I like to do a blanket/button stitch around the button hole, to prevent stretching with use. I would love to use velcro but all the velcro I can buy has a really had backing that is really hard to sew.

Lyn, I've never seen it! Interesting to try, I could use a few to fit to different sizes, I suppose...

Thanks for the link Lyn. Couldn't you just felt those inside and have a hidden magnet clasp?

Couldn't you just felt those inside and have a hidden magnet clasp? Being felted inside they could be too weak to hold. I work a lot with magnet snaps in my gadget cases and it always a headache to find the magnets of a suitable strength...

You're probably right Galina. Haven't messed around with magnetic clasps too much.

I haven't used magnets, but they look interesting. Thanks Lyn.
I do use Velcro and it's a bit tough to stitch but it's usually a small area.

Felicity, I use sew on press buttons (metal) Plastic ones are no good. They can easily be removed and sewn again if they don't fit the size.

I too was thinking press buttons (snap fastenings, press studs, we all have different names for them).

I like the magnets and think they could work felted in, or make a hole just big enough for them.
I prefer buttons and holes for most things, I find velcro and press studs too strong and risk tearing the felt.

Do you stitch around the holes Zed? I'd prefer buttons as well (I have lovely buttons waiting but stitching is not my strong point...

Yeah, I do blanket/button hole stitch like Ann. I used to use sewing thread and try to do it small kind of like shirt buttonholes, but now I mostly use embroidery thread and make it more of a feature. This is the best photo I have: Purse by zedster01, on Flickr I've got a blanket stitch album on flickr if that will help? www.flickr.com/photos/zedster01/albums/72157623970571108I buy a lot of embroidery thread from Poundworld, there's 12 in a pack, and because it's floss, you can separate the strands and make your own 'blends'
