You are very good at foraging around these places for frame options Lindsay. It depends on my mood whether I can be bothered or not! Thanks for the spur on though.

Tracey - framed pictures don't have to be big. Annie's made them as small as 4" linkThat advice is so timely Lyn thanks. I have just started thinking how to submit my work differently outside of my larger frame and glass option. I took my new design of cards to show a friend who is arty and she said she thought they would look even better in a small deep edge frame, set back.
I was going to post to ask about mat and frame as I haven't ever explored that route. I contacted my framer for a price for a 16x12 mat and frame, which wasn't too bad, so I have ordered the cello bags for that size. So that gives me roughly A4 size to work in. I hope this way of presenting work will sell, it will be a change.
Here is a big question for anyone though please - I have been reading that a coloured mat and frame is a big no no, but I would personally be leaning towards that, what do you think?
I have only chopped the piece for one card Lyn, I will look at the rest in terms of two pictures instead.
I've only ever seen artwork for sale in white or cream mounts. I suppose the white or cream mount would allow a potential buyer to think about where it might look good in their home no matter what their colour scheme is. Of course there are exceptions, but if the piece is small, beware setting it into a deep frame - usually felt needs light!

Thanks Lyn. I don't think little box frames are for me really.
I have been adding to the larger beach scene by machine sewing blue scrim into the sea and lots of French knots on the beach and machining Indian lace onto the sand, looks better in my opinion! Ooh we love a bit of texture....!
Took pictures to show you all but they turned out rubbish, what a surprise.

Tracey, I agree with Lyn about white or cream matte board. I have been selling a variety of framed prints for a long time at the store here. People want a white matte board and a black frame. If it's a gift, then they feel safe in giving it to someone else because "it will go anywhere" and if it's for them, they still want the white and black. If someone wants something else, then they just buy a print by itself and then frame it themselves.
You could offer pieces that were just on the backing with a white matte board in a clear sleeve without frames and charge a bit less. Then it would be ready for framing.

Thanks Ruth. I thought it would be something you sell at your store so would have advice on. I may go with a colour called Osprey, a soft cream with very faint flecking to begin with, then if need arises, change to white.

I’ve used a mat and frame for a 3D panda pic. No glass. So I don’t see why not for other pieces.

I can get canvas frames fairly cheap. proper frames are harder. I do look at the second hand store for simple frames I can use. when you take the glass out it gives you room for the felt. You can use the glass as a template if it will fill the whole thing.

I dislike felt under glass, it is too tactile to smother, but this is how work is presented in galleries apart from oils. At least if I am selling mat and framed pieces, the customer gets to see the piece 'breathing', how they continue to frame it will be up to them.
Selling one of my stretched canvas pictures, the customer asked how to clean any dust from it and was very happy with the 'a quick blast with the hairdryer, or a soft clean paintbrush'.

Ha ha, I am spending too much time on this forum! I have just had an interesting albeit confusing conversation with my framer asking for mat and frame when of course I should have been asking for mount and backboard! DOH!

I was wondering why I was struggling to understand this conversation. Mount & backboard I get!

Yes sorry, I was just going with the flow as this way of presenting work is new to me! got it now....and also got a good deal from the framer, looking forward to trying this new direction.
Oh and guess what Ruth? the framer suggested antique white as a mount/frame(!) keep it simple he said, so I am a convert....

Glad you got a deal from the framer. I am hoping I can get a good deal when I get my landscape pieces all done.
