I was intrigued by the food colour dyeing where the colour splits out - breaking out is it called? So I bought a pot of Wilton's Violet food colour to try out on some unknown types of undyed wool And this is what I got! First off, with tiny quantities of wool, I got a dusky pink. The second batch in the same liquid turned out pale teal/turquoise So then I went the whole hog and pushed a whole load into the pot. Some of it was saturated whilst other parts I had to squidge and squeeze to get them wet. And another more intense version by adding more dye and vinegar with about an inch of water in the pan And here's what I made with them. The wool felted really quickly and feels quite strong and tough. I was able to be quite brutal with it getting it to shrink to fit the tiny shot glass in the vase! I had some sari silk in just these colours which I used for the flap of the purse/clutch bag. All in all a very enjoyable introduction to dyeing, so now I have ordered more food colours and some of the Eurolana dyes from WOW

That's very interesting Marian. I hadn't heard of Wilton food colouring nor of the interesting colour split. I see Lakeland stock it, so might give it a try. Do you know how light and colourfast it is? You'll be pleased with the Eurolana dyes. They are so easy to use and so little dye powder is needed that they last for ages. Also the made up dye is still good after several months. Have fun!

Wilton icing gel dyes were the first dyes that I used on wool, but I did find that there was some color running or bleeding. Marian, did you experience color loss when rinsing?

Obviously, the colour did not change. Nice job done Marian. I've heard of Wilton dyes, need to find out if I can get them here.

Actually I had less colour run with this dye/wool than I have experienced with some of the WOW merinos I've used.
I buy from ebay

Glad you tried the dyeing Marian - now there will be no stopping you The bag is lovely. I personally don't like the food color dyes much but use what works for you.

Wilton food dyes are sold at Walmart, Michael s, Hobby Lobby or any store where cake decorating supplies are sold. This is in the US.

Nice dye spin and knit. Is it one of those patterns you knit from side to side instead of up and down?
