Great colors, Nada. The fibers just start turning blue when you pull them out of the vat? How interesting!!

Elizabeth - the indigo needs oxygen to turn blue. It's a really neat thing to see.

I dyed my red vest (the prefelt) with cochineal and am very happy with the red. I tested rose leaves and they worked well.Eucalyptus leaves best from trees with bare 'skin like' trunks rather than rough bark types I am told. In an experiment from my garden I used leaves from roses, Geum and ferns but the ferns were not successful. The Geum was very clear.

This is the test piece on merino prefelt. The rose leaf and Geum are much clearer than the ferns or the yarrow I added. This was simmered in an aluminium pot with iron pieces ( horseshoes) in the bottom and a little cream of tartar to increase the ph.

Chookie, you got some very nice results. However, I am not so satisfied with my experiment: I used purple potatoes which I sliced and wrapped in silk, hoping that I would get nice prints. What I got were only faint patches of potato rings otherwise the colour was pale bluish green (sorry the picture does not show real colour) . I used this silk to make a very light nuno felted scarf . I think it turned out nice but I am aware that I am still far away from successful eco prints.

Both of you--Chookie and Nada--got interesting results. Somewhere along the path, “sampling” was ground into my head, so I have been using cotton sheeting and muslin until I figure out the eco-printing. You are brave to try merino and silk!

Chookie your experiment looks nice. What will you do with it?
Nada even though your experiment didnt turn out as planned you sure made a beautiful scarf from it.

Thanks everyone, Nada I too tried with Purple Congo potatoes but like you most colour washed away. All I had was a faded pink in the end -very wishy washy colour. I am concentrating on garden plants now ( as in leaves) for eco printing rather than actual dyes. Next Sunday I am attending plant based dyeing workshop with Julia Billings (Woollenflower) so hopefully I come away with more than the basics I have now.
Pandagirl, I haven't decided what if anything I will do with that experiment,I have a few that didn't come out quite as well and some smaller pieces too , some just have good prints and bad at random places..... maybe put them all together one day as a patchwork something? LOL
Luvswool, I decided to use bits and bobs of what I have, as testing on other fabrics really won't tell me what result I will get on the actual fabric. Results are still pretty random but I think even India Flint agrees that that happens sometimes.

These are images of a nuno experiment with merino on silk without colour. The whole was wrapped in wool blanketing and simmered for an hour and left for 24 hours with just iron horseshoes in the aluminium pot and rinsed with vinegar at the end. Very pale imagery. Eucalyptus leaves and rose leaves were used for the prints. It in nicely even and ephemeral which I think suits the silks. This is only about 6inches x18 inches long. it was my try and joining silk and felt in strips- not entirely successful - as some let go in places but some random stitches will fix that .LOL

Hello Everyone. This week I did a bit of Eco printing which I have not done in awhile. This silk scarf was soaked in vinegar water. Then I dipped Maple Leaves, Japanese Bloodgood Leaves, Rose leaves, Peony and geranium leaves in rusty water and then iron water.. Rolled in a copper pipe. The pot had vinegar water with rusty water and a wee bit of iron water added...it was boiled for 3 hours and left set for 24 hours... This is the results..
