Here's a hat I made last weekend as a sample for a local class I'm going to teach in February. It's made with short fiber merino batt and silk noil. It was white and then I direct dyed it with Procion MX dyes. The Procion dyes took up better in the silk than the cotton (that was the plan) so I got a mottled effect. I read somewhere that the color of the year for 2012 was tangerine so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Lovely hat - the folds look very 'comfy' together - and I like the mottled effect very much.
I think you're right - I too read about orange being the 'in' colour soon.

Like the mottled effect of the hat. As Ann says - very renaissance! Orange is the colour for this year - my daughter just bought an orange coat - looks good!

Ruth- why do you use batts for hats?

Thanks everyone - I use batts because it is a very simple layout that takes only a few minutes for the wool. I just use one layer of batt as it comes, tear it to the shape I want and you're ready to start felting.

I had a question about what the resist looked like for this hat. Here's a photo. The yellow hat form in the middle is what the hat is sitting on in the first photo to show you the size difference.

Wow I think I'd have expected the straight part to have been longer.

Thank you Ruth, The resist wasn't what I expected. I would like to replicate your resist and make my own one. As I live on the other side of the world I am unable to come to your class, so this is the next best thing I feel. Thanks again for showing us your resist. As a newbie to felting the resists are one of the hardest parts to get your head around. By seeing a few it helps a lot.
Cheers, Joey

Thank you, Ruth, for sharing your resist. I was hoping you would, but hesitated to ask since you already share sooooo much. (Just what I need, another hat in South Florida)
