I don't know what it was, some commercial alpaca tops. I wouldn't be surprised to find it was some weird alpaca-plastic hybrid, though plastic isn't as bad! I stick to proper stuff now

You should see a bag I made once, Jane! I'd tried these awful alpaca tops once and didn't like them, but thought I'd give them another go on a bag. It's terrible ... feltingandfiberstudio.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/alpaca-bag.jpgI don't know where they got the fibre from, but it wasn't like any alpaca I'd used before.

I don't know enough about dyeing to know what would/should work or why. Or how to get the dye to fix if you don't mix the salt/soda in with the dye. You got some good results We used to make pictures by mixing washing up liquid with kids paint, blowing bubbles through a straw, then putting paper on top, simple but great resulrs!

Glad you're starting to feel better, Judy. My back seized up about a month ago and I was in agony for 2 days, I can't imagine how painful and difficult yours must have been.

I just have to tell you that Teri, Galina and Lyn have all been so unbelievably generous with so many wonderful wools, fibres and fabrics. I've got dyed fibre drying all over the place at the moment, but when I get the chance I will take photos. I love our community

I think Ruth's pretty much covered it. I mostly just use the primaries too, and black. I find that the 'standard' red is too weak or something so I add a little black, you can test the colours out on a bit of paper.
If I want a bunch of fibre to be variegated, I spread it out, squirt/drip bits of the colours/shades I want onto the fibre, then press it to spread the dye out. I very rarely dye things a flat colour.

You're welcome, Magzie. I did try to find a photo for you, I shrank an 18.5 micron sample down as much as I physically could not so long ago, but it had nylon or viscose tops on so the texture isn't quite so apparent. I know I uploaded a picture here but can't find it!

I love that first photo, that is excellent, I think people would buy that for their wall or on a greetings card etc. It might be harder to felt though.

This was the photo Judith posted of it a while ago (hope you don't mind, Judith!) flic.kr/p/qWGVKPand though I don't have any labelled as cap merino, I did get some stuff that was very similar, and to me, it isn't just short fibre or not being used to batts, the fibre is just bits and the batts I got looked like fat compressed chunks torn off some large thick batt. None of the felt pieces I made with batts from wollknoll have been as easy to lay out or have felted as evenly/neatly as other batts or tops.

I just had a look at my etsy stats, and 36 views have come from Pinterest in the last 30 days. I don't know if that is good or not?
