I taught the Landscape Class today and had a good number of students. I tried to simplify every thing to give them the rules of design with examples of each point. Everything went well, as long as I was talking about these things. But when it came time to take out their fabrics and actually build their landscape, they brought all the wrong fabrics. Even though they had been given detailed instructions and illustrated pictures of the process, most of them brought green fabrics that were all medium value. No lights, no darks, just mediums. They did not read the instructions or they don't know the difference between lights, mediums and darks. The whole class was about contrast. Half of them were not able to do it. So, with the exception of a few, I don't think you can make artists out of quilters. They may do better when they get home and buy some different fabrics. They took home a lot of handouts to help them.

Lots of people don't understand values Judy. Hopefully, they have learned what they need now.

Sometimes it is easier to bring all the materials yourself. I hope the people that didn't bring the right things weren't to disappointed.

I must admit, I don't understand values. I might if I was taught it, but even doing art for 5 years at school we never touched on that. We didn't touch on anything thinking about it Maybe you need to incorporate a dyeing class, Judy to teach how to darken the fabrics to get more shades

Hue perhaps?

Hue is color. That is different from value. Value of color is shading it from very light to very dark. I did explain that in the instructions and I even had pictures to illustrate. If you take a color red and mix white into it, you change the value to pink. If you mix black into red you will get a darker value. That is how you create contrasts from light to dark. Hopefully, they went away with a better understanding of how to choose fabrics.
Today I went to the country to my small fiber art guild meeting. We watched a DVD on using zippers in our art quilts and then did some planning for our group Steampunk project. We all brought the elements we had collected and looked at books on Steampunk art.

yes hue is what I was thinking of. We learned how to use a colour wheel. I never understood all the lines and holes in them before. we did all kinds of colour exercises. showing how colours change when you put them next to other colours and such. it was very helpful.

I made a summer dress yesterday and have fabric to make a couple more. Am I wasting my time? Summer didn't arrive at all last year! I'll just have to take a holiday to a sunny destination.

I am up too early, but this has been such a busy week. Today I will go to the monthly meeting of our Visual Alliance. I will pick up one of my fiber art pieces from an exhibit and then come home to tidy up the studio and mount # 23 onto my painted black canvas. I had to put it aside while I did a million other things. Looking forward to Sunday and a day of hand stitching after church.
