I always make some kind of textile image for my family's Christmas cards - this is for 2012.
I needle felted a sheep's face and laid it atop 4 loose layers of merino fibres and wensleydale curls. It looked fabulous.....until I felted it......and then I didn't like it.... it was too 'flat'.
I liked the face so I cut it out but once removed from the large piece of felt, the sheep's face didn't look quite finished, so I raided my grand-daughter's box of felt tips and added a few lines.
Once again I laid out merino wool fibres and curls and placed the sheep's face on the top. No more felting. I loved it just as it was.
I wanted an image not a piece of felt so out came the camera and the job was done.

It's beautiful, the curlse really set of the face. I do know what you mean when something looks so good in the layout stage and looses it in the felting prosses. sometimes want to figure a way of freezing it and framing it.

Thank you!
There was a lot of stuff going on to make the image look good that had nothing to do with me.
For instance, I needle felted the face so I could get a decent shape, then it got wet felted with the first lot of wool and curls. In so doing, the face developed 'crinkles' which really made it look good.
I love serendipity!

It's wonderful, and it just proves that you have to know when to stop! She's a lovely "owld yow" as we say in Yorkshire!

Lyn I ment to ask how you do the images for the cards? do you have special cards to slip photos in or do you just print them at home right on cardstock. or something else. I am doing something I think might make a nice card when I am done.

Hello Ann - I usually get the photos printed, round the corners with a cutter, then stick them (using double-sided sticky tape) on to the front of folded card. Then I make a paper insert to glue inside. This year though, I'm going to try printing straight onto card. If it doesn't look good enough, then I'll get the photos printed off again.

I will do Ann but I'm away this morning to deepest, darkest Wales for a couple of days so I won't be on the forum again until Monday night (I think that's late afternoon on your side of the pond).
