Teri, the hats are superb and quite challenging for the maker. I still don't understand - are the sausages stuffed with something or hollow? The smaller ones seem hollow. hod did you join them? Looking forward to seeing the fire hat with the embellishment you are planning.
Mwes, the pod is lovely and I think Lyn has answered all your questions. I personally like if the pod is wrinkled.

Great flame hat I think foil on it will be great. the chain hat is different but I can see it with someone with dreads or long hair looping bits through different links.
The pod is great but not what you had in mind. I know it make it hard for you to like when it's not what you intended. We don't know the intent so it's great to us. I agree with Lyn rough or quick felting causes more wool migration. also rough fulling can cause it to wrinkle more. Throwing at the end to get shrinkage will do that. one thing that helps reduce the wrinkles is if at the end you blow up a ball or balloon inside to stretch it out a little. You can leave it on the ball to dry.

Mwes, the pod is LOVELY! You should be very proud of it. I wonder if the colors turned dull because the blue fibers migrated through the other colors, which is just a characteristic of felt.. Ann, this idea is brilliant, I need to try it: - It may be useful to make some samples. Make a piece of pre-felt then cut a strip off and put it to one side. Continue rolling the rest of the pre-felt then cut another strip off. Make about four strips of pre-felt of varying degrees of firmess. Then see how differently they felt into a sample piece.

I can't think of anything to add. Using white is always hard, because it's usually not real white and any color underneath will try to migrate. I've had this problem as well, but I think your pod looks wonderful. Wrinkles are a part vessel experience. I think they add character.

Teri, you are MAD! What strange genius imagined up these sculptures, called them Hats & brought them into reality?! They are brilliant! Even if you can't think what use they'd be, be sure to keep them for use in bringing attention to your stall at a sale, or in case you ever find a costume supplier or similar... I see both of these in Cirque Du Soleil. Or if you ever do an artistic photoshoot. Many purposes, they have.
Mwes, great fun pod. I found that I got smoother sides with more experience - the uneven bumpy bits you were worrying over can be caused at the edges of the resist, I taught myself to rub in from the edges to avoid this. Just a thought.

I've been on and off the forum all day and have lost track of what I've commented on! The hats and vessels are gorgeous I think you got lots of great advice about the vessel. And I think that's why our community works, because we're interested in the hows and whys of felting and don't just want to 'perfect' one aspect of it.

mwes I personally want some wrinkles in my work - really do not want my felt to look like something made on a machine. As I thiink Marilyn siad it gives character
Waiting on Terri's foil addition to her flames

Thanks Everyone! Especially Jill and Ann for your suggestions - next stop Cirque de Soleil! Frances, I love the idea of making a scarf / shawl with the flame hat technique It's not that difficult just time-consuming to cut and shape each flame. Nada, the lower 2 rings (that sit on the head) and the one lying across them were stuffed with fibre filling. I could have used fabric stiffener but I don't like how it feels next to the skin so I restricted it's use to the dangling chains. I attached the smaller chains to the body by cutting them open and stitching them closed again while they were still at the firm prefelt stage. MWES, you can sometimes smooth the wrinkles out by rubbing the surface (make sure it is really soapy and slippery first or you will get pilling), I do this over a balloon for pods.

I keep forgetting that I made a small flower shaped vessel the other day, Sunday maybe. It turned out better than I expected, but if I did it again, I'd make the shape curvier, there were thin spots where the petals met the body because the angle was too sharp and the gap too small.
