Thanks for the comments. I probably did cut the resist out too soon, but I was worried it would have felted too much and I wouldn't have been able to separate out the bowls. I'll try the suggestion of a resist between the two layers, thanks.
I love those pod clusters Teri, particularly the first one because the pods are so well defined.

I tried doing a bowl within a bowl using a single resist with 8 layers. I then cut a big circle out of the top 4 layers and a smaller circle out of the bottom 4 layers. It was difficult to felt as cutting it like that made the whole thing want to separate into 2. It would have been much easier just to do 2 bowls and put one inside the other ... Your last sentence made me laugh !!!

Smiff, I agree with Teri, fulling it enough is probably key to make sure they are joined enough. Did you leave a hole in the smaller resist so the two layers would join at the bottom? The beading is a great finish.
Teri, you are certainly perfecting your clusters. I have a feeling you're not done. :-)

Thank you all, looks like sample 1 is the winner which was my first instinct for binding this piece, you're not really encouraging me to make samples though!

Smiff - great job on trying something new. It turned out well even though it was a bit difficult.
Teri - I actually like all your pod formations. I think a combination of each so some are more connected at the bottom and some are more connected in the middle or the top would make it much more organic.

The new challenge will set me back at that hat and trying out some ideas to reuse some scraps on it...maybe needle felt and rewetting it to reshape it a bit more. Hopefully if I reqwork it some of the guardhairs may disappear.or I will try Ann's idea of shaving it...never done that so that too would something new to try.may need advice on how not to shave holes though! LOL

I never got a chance to try doing this challenge. My felting table in the basement was being used for packaging all of those dryer balls that I made. I am still working on another order for them.

Liz - you can add something here anytime. Doesn't really matter when it's done!
