This project is one of the first wet-felting I made on my own, after having taken one wet felt vessels class. After that, I wanted to make something flat (you understand, right?) But this piece is not very exciting, and I've had it hanging around for almost 2 years now, gathering dust. The subject is the standing stones of Caithness, in Scotland, where I traveled a few years ago. I did a quick pencil sketch from memory and then wet felted the base, added some handmade pre felts, and so there you are. But for me, it looks unfinished. I just cannot figure out what to do with it. I've thought of beading and maybe hand-stitching. I am not comfortable doing machine stitching on art work, even though I also quilt. So, ladies, what would you recommend I do with this piece? What kind of embellishments could finish it off? feltingandfiberstudio.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/98bqluntoyum9n4xp_cd.jpg

I like it but I see what you mean. The stones need something I think. maybe hand stitch some runes on them. If you are not comfortable stitching how about how about using markers or water colour pencils to had some colour definition or runes.

Cathy, Ann is right the stones need dimension. Tiles or cracks with silk? If you made tiles separately then you could needle felt them on or needle felt the silk cracks. You could also use a darker prefelt as a shadow on the sides. Just ideas. Its a nice piece. Good luck!

I would go for beading.

To my taste it's not felted enough so there is an option to felt it more! I would "mist" it slightly with very thin wisps of wool changing colour gradually from one side to another. And then felt all together slowly and gently. It will help to soft edges and make it less literal (sun and stones).

Ladies, thanks…these are all great ideas! Now I have to decide whether or not this piece deserves the time it will take to transform it.

This is a piece that is crying out to be finished and then be cherished - it's a great subject.
The stones are not 'strong' enough i.e. my eye is drawn through them and onto the sun. There are some very good ideas above that would be worth trying.

Ruth, I had forgotten about cutting up a felt piece as Lyn did--great idea! Since it is really a beginner's piece, I just don't want to invest a lot more time which some techniques would require.
Thanks, Lyn Just have to rethink and consider all of the above ideas.

I have done a bit of additional needle-felting on the stones and am still working it and thinking of slicing it. But in the meantime, I have another felt piece that I made for my son, and I would like to add text to it. So I am wondering if any of you add text to your wallhangings, and if so, how you would go about the process. My piece is about 20 x 24, so a bit large. And it needs more felting, I know, but I would like to add the text first. I've considered adding hand-stitching, placing the text on the colored pre-felt pieces but cannot think of another option. Machine embroidery is out for me--it's just a personal thing. I experimented with transfer of text and photos a few weeks ago and do not care for the results. What would all you recommend? What have you used as text on felt in the past? IMG_5254 by catwycliff, on Flickr

I am thinking hand stitching would be the best bet. You can print, silk screen or stencil on felt with thickened dyes. But you'd need either print paste or something to thicken your dye with. To show up well, I think you'd need black or a very dark color.

Thought so…I will probably go with hand-embroidery in black or dark brown. BTW, I am using your ideas posted on Finishing & Framing…very helpful!

Wondering if anyone else out there adds text to their wall hangings or other fiber creations? I know this technique is gaining popularity in some art circles, particularly in the area of mixed media. Do you think text compliments or detracts from fiber art?

Since artists have been signing their works for centuries, I think it adds some professionalism to a finished piece. I've seen fiber arts signed as well. It's a nice touch IMHO.
