I have a collection of silk 'hems' or the rolled edges, I always tear them off.

How brave you are, Zed! For me, the hemmed scarves represent a guarantee that if the ruching is not achieved, the edges are still presentable. Looking forward to Marilyn's post on ruching or ruffling edges.

Zed are you talking about the selvage edges? I tear them off and keep them as well. Someday I'll think of a use for them.

I tear those off aswell marilyn, that's a separate collection I meant those hand rolled edges, with little stitches you often get on silk scarves. I use both under silk for effects. I don't use mine for scarves, Cathy, maybe one day

dear Marilyn,
If I don't hem, won't the edges fray out? I will definitely look out for your blog.

I buy yardage, except for the big half circles. I often use the salvage as the finished edge when I am leaving a few inches of the edge unfelted. on the big circles I usually leave 4-6 inches of the round edge unfelted so leave the rolled hem.

Marilyn,
I checked out your autumn photos and the scarf is really beautiful. I love your coloring. Did you dye the wool fiber separately then attached to silk fabric?

Thanks Josie. No, I dyed the silk. It was actually two pieces of fabric that I joined with yellow wool I had dyed, hence the yellow strips in several places along the width. There was only one join, but I used the yellow as a pattern. I actually based the colorway on a skein of yarn I had and got the wool roving to match. The yarn is the stripes on each side with the tassels at the ends.
For some reason, I'm having trouble uploading a picture. I'll try later.

Here is the result of my experiment with laying wool along the edges of unhemmed silk.

Zara, the scarf it beautiful! Did you use prefelt for the flowers? How did you get them to look 3 dimensional? It looks like there is a striped pattern to the fabric. Was the fabric silk?
Great job!
