Thanks Marilyn! I first felted whisps of wool, slightly twisted in the ends, in the shape of a flower directly on the silk fabric. But that looked quite smeared out in the end . So I felted another flower (or rather, another set of petals) seperately and then needle felted that on top of the flower shape on the scarf. The fabric is pure silk (but I don't know what kind - just that it is a quite loose weave and quite rough). The striped pattern is an effect of the wool creating creases in the fabric.

Well it turned out great Zara. It's amazing how creative we can get when things don't turn out as planned. I really love the flowers and design.

Zara, your scarf is wonderful, and I amazed how straight the edges look. Was it difficult to keep the wool edges even, and also to keep the wool from slipping on the silk? The rippling effect of the creased silk is quite lovely!

Zara and Marilyn, Both scarves look very pretty. I am planning to make one using different fabrics. I'll post a photo when it's finished.

Zara - your scarf turned out great. Were you happy with the end result? The addition of the 3D flower really makes the scarf.

The rippling effect of the creased silk is quite lovely! Thanks! I layed out the wool with the fibers perpendicular to the edge on both sides of the silk and they felted in quite quickly. The wool is from Rya sheep that have very long and strong fibers, so only one row of fibers needed. Unfortunatley not the softest wool though.

I am very pleased considering that it was my 3rd attempt at nuno felting with silk. ;-) I agree that the 3D flower (that was not planed to begin with) made all the difference. Just a shame that I don't use scarfs...

Marilyn, thanks for sharing more photos of your scarf and process used. I'm crystal clear now. You all have provided so much knowledge on this subject.
By the way, I was reading where you use vinegar in the finishing process of washing the felt. Do you ever have problems getting all the vinegar out so the scarf does not have the smell? i have had the problem before, and wanted to know if you have any tips on this.
thanks

Zara- I also love your scarf. the design and the ruched up effect is really beautiful. This encourages me more to try using less wool on my nuno felt scarves. Endless possibilities as witnessed by your lovely scarf. thanks for sharing

Josie, I only use one tablespoon of vinegar to a quart of water. I usually rinse for a few minutes after and have not had an issue with smell.
I look forward to seeing your ruffled scarf when you make one. Please don't hesitate to ask questions if you run into a problem.

Thanks Marilyn. I will make sure I rinse well then, as i have only used a small drop of vinegar. Is it true the vinegar helps to set the color? Will post when i experiment with the ruffle scarf.

When dyeing using acid dyes, vinegar helps set the color. The purpose of the vinegar rinse after felting/fulling is to neutralize and remove the soap. Soap can break down the fiber over time so it's best to rinse it out thoroughly. I look forward to seeing your scarf!
