Another big jump would be to add a real photo--I finally did! But I do understand that some folks do not want to get that personal. Either way works.

I am working on a fiber art piece called Avatar on Vacation. I know this is crazy, but I need a vacation and can't go anywhere. So I thought, how about making an Avatar of myself. I will post it when I get it finished. Not great art, just great fun.

Wool and all animal fibres are naturally acidic. Soap is alkaline and encourages the felting process because it helps to open up the small scales on the fibres which encourages the felting process. A vinegar rinse restores the acidity which helps to restore the lustre and protects against further damage. It's a good idea to use a weak vinegar final rinse on all woollen garments and it doesn't leave a smell.

Michele,
Thanks for this info. I checked them out and the colors are beautiful. Unfortunately, the cost is too high for me now including shipping from Australia. I'm in the U.S.. Keep me posted if you hear of anything locally. I still don't have the time to do my own dyeing. Perhaps I will put this on my list for next year.

There are plenty of etsy shops that sell hand dyed silk. But Fiber Artist Suzanne Morgan just announced on Facebook she is now selling hand dyed silk yardage. Suzannemorgan.com.
'I also believe outback fibers sells some hand dyed scarves. Outbackfibers.com
Good luck and be sure to show us your new creations!

Josie, quite a few members here dye their own silks, I don't want to speak for them or promise anything, but you could start a new thread asking how much someone would charge for a custom order, or how much it would cost if they dyed a few extra yards for you etc. It's worth asking.

Hi Ladies, I'm going back to this original message as I wanted to talk to you about dyeing again. I want to try it, but I'm not quite sure where to start. I went to Dharma site and they have many types of dyes, so question is this. 1. which dye has the best colorfastness? I have noticed with some of the silks i purchase that some bleed a lot, yet others bleed less. 2. reactive or acid? 3. Which dye has more color variation? 4. How do you get variegated coloring within a dye lot? Do I mix different colors, like on the color wheel? Or to start should I just use one color? 5. I also visited Carol's blog post and I like the look of the dyeing she did, which is Acid. Is this the best way for me to start, and can I dye scarf length? 6. Where can I get more detailed instructions on how to proceed with the best dye method? thanks
