_My first attempt at machine stitching onto a hand-dyed silk cap; following instruction from Kath Danswan's book,'Beautiful Bowls'.

That's wonderful! I love it. Does it get it's shape from the stitching?

Thanks. The silk cap is sandwiched between 2 layers of 'solvy' soluable fabric, some of which is left in when you rinse the piece after stitching, which helps with the shaping. However, the stitching provides the greatest shaping. Circular stitching in the centre gives a base and then radial lines. I wasn't convinced this was enough to make a bowl shape, so added some darts as well. Haven't achieved the effect Kath Danswan gets, but then again it was my first try. Jan

I think it's beautiful - such pretty colours too.
p.s. I just adore your avatar - is there a story behind it?

A lovely flower. It's on my list of things to do. What's the name of the book?

You can get similar results by stitching on almost any fabric, but I think that the silk has a particular beauty to it. One of our teachers in our fiber arts group made flowers from just thread stitching, no fabric involved. They were wonderful. I have been wanting to do this, but just never found the time.
