Very nice Judith. Lots of patience too to get all flowers so even.

The ice-dyed silk looks lovely, Judith! Also looks like hard work. What will you do with the floral silk?

Thanks Cathy. Not hard work though. The most fiddly part is sticking the silk pins into the frame. Not sure what it will be used for, but I certainly don't need yet another scarf!

Just spotted your posts Teri. I've only batiked on fine fabrics rather than felt, but I wouldn't think that wax (hot or cold) would completely penetrate the fabric so you'd get leaching. While we're on the subject of batik this is quite interesting, just forget you've heard of H&S!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDsD5sQOF_A

Thanks for the video Judith - quite a process. I didn't realize that they discharged the fabric too.

What a lot of work. I wonder what glass dye is. I have to say that it was very nice at the end but I liked it after the first discharge best.

For those of you who are interested in ice dyeing.....my small fiber group spent a day experimenting with microwave ice dyeing. The results on wool are disappointing....however, that's not really a surprise as we used Procion MX dyes. However, a silk noil piece I dyed is fabulous....life has it's little surprises! I've blogged about the process here......and again here with my results. Lots of photos so check it out and perhaps it will inspire you to give it a try as well.

I saw this on your blog Mary and thought "what a great idea!". It would be great to see a more controlled experiment showing one done the regular way and one done in the microwave with similar variables.
I think your pink felt is much better than it was. I think it would work for a background or to add some deconstructed screen printing on top.
I use acid dyes with ice dyeing for wool and felt. You have to do the extra step of steaming after everything is melted but they work great.
Also, if you soak your felt/wool in vinegar water before using the Procion dyes, they will hold better. Not quite as strong as the acid dyes but still good results.

Mary, I don't mind the first two pieces. Like Ruth said you could further process them, embellish them or cut it up to use in another project. Like Ruth I use acids dyes in ice dyeing and have some really nice results. But I'm sure it was fun trying the new method. The silk noil is gorgeous!

Thank you everyone! Your observations are right on target....MX dyes are not intended for wool.....though I have gotten some good results duirng other attempts that didn't include ice dyeing. We used soda ash as a mordant......but when I took a workshop with Chad Hagan, who uses acid dyes, the wool wasn't mordant at all and we got over the moon results. She CAREFULLY controls the dye pot temperature.
Like I said in my blog....we worked pretty much slap dash....and with 6 of us...believe me there was no 'control' to be able to really establish a 'recipe'. Perhaps that's the beauty of some of this.....unexpected results keep us guessing. My disappointments will be redyed or reprocessed somehow. Two of our members are REALLY engrossed in mixed media layering....using lots of techniques so surely there will be one upcoming that will yet again change the look of these pieces.
Our group lost one of the venues where we exhibited our quilts for sale due to remodling of the facility. So.....I've been spending time adding (and preparing to add) quite a bit more work to my online gallery shop. I still have stacks of quilts that were created for my books/workshops/cruise-tour projects.....time to get them listed so someone else can enjoy them. They've served their purpose already for me so the pricing will be very reasonable. Now all I need to do is find time to add mor than one or two at a time like I've been doing for the last week!!!
