I thought I'd have a try at ice dyeing, Photo below.
There are parts I like, but I'm not keen on the overall effect. I'm sure I'll find a use for it though! CIMG6163 by koffipot, on Flickr

What kind of wax do you use? How do you get the wax out? I love it, beautiful layering.

It's beeswax which I was given by a beekeeper friend. I had to render it down as it had a few dead bees and debris in it. I wrap it in absorbent paper and steam it for about 45 mins which sets the dye and also loosens much of the wax, the rest can be removed with a hot iron and absorbent paper.
If using on thicker material the wax is more difficult to remove but a dip in White Spirit loosens it (doesn't smell so good though), then a good wash in soapy water.
The salt crystals on the wet dye give a nice speckled effect. I use dishwasher salt with large crystals. The salt draws the dye in and leaves a deeper imprint when dry.
I've had great fun, it's years since I had my wax pot out and I aim to do more this summer.

very cool Judith. I really like the overall effect. It really enhanced the previous dye job without hiding it. Not sure what white spirits are, alcohol maybe or paint thinner? I have know idea what dishwasher salt is. What is its purpose in the dishwasher? if you are steam setting are you using acid dyes or something else on the silk.

Thanks Ann, I feel it toned down the initial dye job which was a bit too busy. White Spirit is used to thin paint and clean brushes, sometimes called Turps. Substitiute here. I suppose alcohol would do the job and wouldn't smell so bad. However it's only required when used on thicker fabric which obviously needs a more generous application of wax. Dishwasher salt is used as a water softener in the dishwasher. What a great multicultural education we get on this site! I'm using acid dyes.
