sometimes its called a satin stitch but most of the people I know use a zig zag to do it. you set the stitch length and also how fast it moves your fabric forward so that your stitches are close. the other thing that it may be for the edge is a serger with a finishing stitch. some do a really nice edge some do the ugly one on the inside of your T-shirt. It depends on the machine. some only do one stitch and some do several. some let you take the knife out so you aren't cutting your fabric. Ruth may know more when it comes to the embroidery machines.

This looks like a triple zig zag - at least that's what it would be on my machine which is a 'Bernina'. It's done by selecting a triple stitch, then increasing the stitch width as desired. Makes quite a nice finish.

Thanks, Judith I don't suppose anyone knows if old machines (ancient hand cranked Singer) can be adapted to sew edges?

if it does zigzag and you can adjust the length of the stretch they you should be able to do it. do you have freecycle over there. they are supposed to be all around the world. My aria has 6. they are usually yahoo groups here. the idea is to keep things out of the landfill. so if you have something you don't want or you are looking for something you post it. I got my display mannequins that way and a really nice dress makers dummy for a friend. People give away just about everything on them. I got my washer and dryer that way and they are great. They where almost new, someone moved into a new house that already had a set and they owned a set as well. Ok I will get of my soap box now.

My daughter has an ancient Singer, and she has heard there is an attachment which simulates a zig zag stitch. I'll ask her if she has any more information. However, you're unlikely to be able to get the triple zig zag.
Ann's advice re. trying 'Freecycle' seems a good idea. It's something else my daughter uses on occasion, I think you have to offer something before you can start trading.

Thanks Ann and Judith. I like the idea of freecycle, I don't have transport though We used to have a Singer shop in town, but it's an 'Antique' (tat and crap) shop now.

Hello Zed - I only use an old Bernina and I've found that if you sew along an edge of felt with close-stitch zig-zag, very slightly stretching the felt as you go, then stitch over the same edge again in zig-zag, you get a lovely wavy edge.
