I've just uploaded a dyeing tutorial to the Felting and Fiber Studio site. It's for direct dyeing and has a guide for making up very small amounts of dye. feltingandfiberstudio.com/2011/12/08/direct-dyeing/I forgot to mention in the tutorial, but I mainly use just red, yellow, blue and teal dyes. I bought a turquoise which turned out to be just like teal, and a green which turned out to be no different to a blue/yellow mix. It's possible to get lots of different shades with very few colours. I have the basic colours, then some others but I tweak them too. if you want a little more blue add some it it should be a redder purple add some more red. One of my favourite is called mallard green. you get some really great colours add in a little more blue or yellow to the mix. Black is great you can really change a colour with black. like when you want to take that blue green into a deep forest green.
I took a colour class and it was really helpful. How colours go together, how they effect each other. We also learned want all the extra lines on the colour wheel are for.

Beautiful colours zed. I love playing with colour too. Adding a tad of the opposite colour can make a garish shade into a more muted one. e.g. a tad of red into green or vice versa.

Thanks, Judith I think I got about 16 different shades from each of the primaries just by adding a drop or two of other colours. Next on the list is definitely black. I guess that means I'll have to do another World of Wool order, poor me

I just got back from my Level II stitch class and we worked on dyeing threads and fabrics for 2 1/2 days. It was great fun. I'll have to take photos to show you what all I dyed. Your colors came out beautifully, Zed. The turquoise next to the oranges really gives a nice pop.
