Lindsay's recent post feltingandfiberstudio.com/2021/11/19/recycling-upcycling-and-how-one-thing-leads-to-another/showed us some ideas for Christmas decorations, which included using vintage lace, crochet, tatting and embroidery. Lindsay very kindly confirmed that I could send the link on to Inspirations Magazine Editors, who send out a weekly newsletter in which someone asked for ideas on what to do with old crochet doilies which were no longer in use. Having confirmed that this was ok, Lindsay also said that she had other ideas for using vintage textiles. I am also a lacemaker, that is most sorts but not bobbin - I don't like the results of most types of bobbin lace - I used to have a small travelling display called "Lace without Bobbins". I now have lots of pieces that are just gathering dust and would be interested in what you may have done Lindsay with these pieces. Perhaps another post, if not how about telling us here?

I would love to see the non-bobbin lace display. Bobbin lace and tatting are the only kinds I know. I would love to see a post about it/them.

Well I don't know about a post as it was so long ago that I did this, must be getting on for 30 years ago, if not longer. I don't have all of the pieces now so couldn't provide much in the way of detailed photos other than the 2 which my husband took ages ago of the Display pieces. Here are the drop box links for them. www.dropbox.com/s/zfeawqhokovy1qx/Lace%20Without%20Bobbins%20-1.jpg?dl=0www.dropbox.com/s/kstfckcr97cthzf/Lace%20Without%20Bobbins%20-2.jpg?dl=0 The lace was crochet, tatting, macramé, white work and pulled thread embroidery (Ayrshire lace) and needlelace. I'll will add to my list of possible posts and see if I can remember enough of what I did to put something together.

Wow, those are some beautiful pieces of lace, very cool. I know of an artist, Barbara Shaw, who does a lot of applique type work where she uses old lace. Here's her Youtube channel where she shows a variety of pieces in which she upcycles fabric and old lace into "paintings". www.youtube.com/channel/UCq0AVqCXFK-6uKvbyRgXS9g/videosI especially like her sheep.

Thank you all.
There had to be something for me to do after work. We didn't have a TV. in fact we still don't. When we got married 52 years ago we couldn't afford a television and over the years we got used to being without one. Now seeing the amount of poor programming (to put it politely) that abounds on all the stations - even the few we have in the UK, I'm glad we still don't have one. Anyway, it gave me lots of time to just do my craft work, as well as read lots of books, so I didn't really notice that things took so long to finish.

Hi Ann. Sorry I haven’t replied sooner, I’ve only just seen this. It’s been a while since I’ve been on the forum as I’ve been madly making things for Christmas markets. It will take me a while to find photos of lace inclusions but in general I’d say 1 I sometimes put bits of lace into the wave of a felt picture to give texture 2 I’ve used a curved strip of lace as a main feature in a felt picture (again to suggest a wave) 3 I’ve added pieces of lace to a slightly contrasting background to make bookmarks 4 I’ve included tatted flowers in the surface of a wet felted vase.
I’m sure there are lots of other examples too. I use it quite often.
Your lace is very lovely.
It can be felted into whatever you want, either in pieces or big sections. You probably need to trap it with fine wool fibres on top when felting to give it a good anchor. The difficult thing may be to cut it up - I don’t like doing this and I didn’t even make it! I’d be happy to make some more specific suggestions if you have any projects in mind. You need to bear in mind that it will shrink with the wool so the appearance will change.
Sorry this is a bit of a ramble. I will try to dig out some photos at some point.

Thanks Lindsay. I can see some of my doilies inside bowls, that might be a good way of using them up and hopefully they would be saleable. Our local museum shop sells (or tries to) craft work at affordable prices, so I'll have a go at that once the Panto is out of the way. I volunteer in the shop once a fortnight and, as we don't get many visitors, I pass the time sewing or crocheting. At the moment I'm doing any hand sewing that is needed on the costume I'm doing for the panto baddie. Before that I was crocheting snowflakes, these are now on sale there. It's a good way of donating as well as passing time. I'm always trying to find things that might sell well for them. Combining old and new crafts (and reducing my stash at the same time) could be the way to go.

And another. I’m trying to find photos that are already hosted somewhere, which is why some are quite old. Doilies inside bowls sounds like a good option.

Thanks Lindsay, they look good. I remember the shell picture and how good the surf looks. The book marks might be good for the Museum shop too.

They don’t need to be expensive. I’ve made some with strips of crochet lace too but I can’t find a photo at the moment. I usually make them in a single sheet then hand finish them after I’ve cut them out to soften the cut edges. That can take a while if you’ve made a lot. If it’s ok to have a small amount of soapy water around that may be a job you could do while you’re volunteering there.

Lots of good ideas. Thanks Lindsay. I wouldn't be able to work with water there, but it's something I could do at home later, with an audio book to keep me company. I do get the ideas of how to use the lace with felt. In fact I now remember that I have seen a scarf/wrap which is made partly from crocheted wool, spun by the maker from tops, the rest of which were used for the felt so that the lace disappeared into the felt. But of course that was using new crochet rather than old stuff. It looked very good though. Ann
