I've just been reading the latest missive from Dorset Arts & Crafts Association. They usually hold an annual juried Arts & Crafts Exhibition at which members and Dorset-resident non-members can enter work. Last year of course they couldn't hold one at all, but this year they will be holding a Members Only Exhibition, part of which will be the Photo Challenge. "The DACA Photo Challenge was first introduced in 2019, to encourage DACA members to create a piece of work in any medium from a photograph which we provided. The work produced formed an interesting and diverse display at the 2019 exhibition." (from the DACA website) This is the photo they are proposing for the members this year: www.dropbox.com/s/t5mcq764tdusqvn/DACA%20photo%20challenge.jpg?dl=0 It looks to me like a large fibre preparation machine. I had hoped to give you a link to photos of the work that members created from the 2019 photo but unfortunately there aren't any on the DACA website. However, it occurred to me that a similar idea might form the basis of a Forum challenge - possibly next year after the current series of quarterly challenges have been done - unless of course you've already got ideas for the next set. Another idea might be the title that an exhibition group of mixed media artists that I used to belong to picked for work for an exhibition - "Out of the Earth". That could be really widely interpreted. Now I really must get on with my 2nd quarter challenge!

Good ideas Ann, we are always looking for ideas for future challenges. Lyn and Annie have been doing the challenges for several years but I'm sure they would love some input.

Yes - it gets harder and harder to think of new ideas! Any help/ideas/suggestions much appreciated!

I'm not sure how we'd manage a "lucky dip" on line, but if you can solve that one, we could perhaps all send you a photo and it could be picked at random. Perhaps photos from our home country (or county), since we seem to be pretty well spread out. I suppose you could give each one a number and then pull one number out of a hat (or 4 for the 4 quarters)

We got our guild poker challenge cards last meeting. there are 4 categories and you get one card from each and you have to use all 4 in your piece. You are aloud to give one back and get another draw. I could probably get the list if you were interested but the other option is to broaden it out to more general fibery things. Maybe you could do a draw and that was for everyone for the quarter. I did am doing the spinning one and the felting one.
my cards are:
Spinning Fibre:Surprise Us! Colour: Rich Dark Colours Type of Yarn: Thick-N-Thin
General Design: Include Locks
Felting ( wool is a given)
Fibre: use thread or fine yarn
Colour: Use Cool Colours Structure/Technique: Needle Felting Other: Make Something No Larger Than An Index Card
I returned my fibre card in felting. It had been flax and I don't really like flax so swapped it and got use thread or fine yarn.

I like the sound of the Poker challenge. Could be fascinating to see the different "makes" from a relatively small brief.

I like the idea of a loosely interpretable challenge more than the idea of the 4 cards with features that you must include: I feel that 4 fixed features are a bit too much stricture to be very inclusive, and I quite like the ample range of different techniques and ideas that this forum members can think and put in practice in reply to a simple title. Although, maybe,if it were only one fixed feature, instead of 4, you could have a lot of freedom to interpret it all the same. I like the idea of an image or photo as challenge, it can offer a lot of possibilities. Caterina

I do think if it's to challenging people just don't do it. Per haps just 2 fixed things would work. Some of my past spinning projects have only been about 2 yards/meters long.
