Hi all I have just discovered that one can buy both matt viscose fibres and shiny ones. All the tutorials I've seen appear to use shiny fibres. Has anyone come across the matt fibres and are they very much 'duller' than the shiny ones? I've not used viscose as tend to have used bamboo if not silk which also gives a nice sheen. I do want to have a go with viscose though as I gather it is good for 'elasticity'. Would that be right - that it is more elastic than bamboo? Secondly, I have some silk dyes. Would they be suitable for dying viscose? If so it would mean I could buy a natural colour and dye my own so I don't have to have big bags of lots of colours..... Lastly - sorry - lots of questions! Where would be the best place to buy natural or coloured viscose fibres in the UK? Or should I order from DHG? Thank you all - and here's to a brighter, free-er 2021 for all of us

All the viscose that I have used has been shiny. I haven't seen any matt. Doing a quick search on google, several sources said that bamboo fiber had more elasticity than viscose fiber. There were several very long articles (that I did not read) that were talking about the process of making bamboo fiber and comparing it to viscose.
Silk dyes are usually acid dyes which work with animal fibers as opposed to plant based fibers such as viscose and bamboo. I would suggest using the silk dyes like fiber reactive dyes and use soda ash instead of an acid. They will work that way and give nearly as good intensity as fiber reactive dyes. I have experimented with both types of dyes in this manner and the results are fairly good.
I would think that World of Wool would have viscose fibers.
I hope that helps! Happy New Year!

I agree with Ruth. I’ve never seen matt viscose. Perhaps it’s something else like bamboo.

I’m only aware of shiny viscose too. You can buy DHG viscose in the UK through Lena Archibald, she stocks a terrific range of colours.

as or dye it depends what you have to dye your silk. It is the only one that takes both kinds of dye. If you have fiber reactive/MX dye it will work.
I have never seen Matt viscose ether.

Hi there
Re matt & shiny - a few years ago I was keen to use the new wonder fibre ‘viscose' and had watched many videos, mainly Russian, on how to use it. I set about buying it from a major supplier (overseas) but was soooooo disappointed when it arrived....it was MATT.
I haven't used it much as decoration for obvious reasons. However I do use it if making something that will take a lot of rubbing/friction - i learnt this from one Russian clothing felter who uses matt viscose as a final top layer to reduce pilling.
With regards to dyeing I have no advice as it is not an activity I’m familiar with.
Hope this helps.

This has been so helpful - and I'd no idea Tencel and Viscose were the same! The matt viscose (incase anyone is interested) I saw on a website called feltbox. I did write to ask them about it but didn't get a reply - they may be closed for the holiday, to be fair Thank you too for the advice on dyes - I am not very up on dyes, having had some very disappointing results using dylon with raffia as my last experiment! I think Lena is going to be my easiest access to viscose already coloured. I'm really surprised WoW doesn't sell a range of colours - they are quite good on bamboos!

I saw you said Lena....is that Lena Archbold by any chance? If so do I take it you might be based in the north U.K.?
Perhaps you would like to DM (I’ve recently learnt this acronym!) me in the personal messages.

Hi Antje - I am in Surrey, South East UK! But yes, I did mean Lena Archbald Thinking I might order direct from DHG as even with the postage it will work out cheaper - but not sure if we are now going to be in for import duties/taxes as we are no longer in the EU! Had to be a down-side, right?! Katerina Korshun (the Russian felter you mention above)does very good tutorials, it is her feather scarf that got me looking for viscose fibres!

As you say....a downside to Brexit. It might be worth you waiting a bit longer as there shouldn't (!!!) be any taxes as far as I understand it....that said the extra paperwork is bound to increase prices - any excuse.
Surrey sadly is no where near North Yorkshire.
I waited 9 months during 2019 to do a face to face workshop with Lena....it fell 1 week inside the March lockdown!!! We have both maintained contact & waited & waited, but there is now no chance for the face to face, very sadly.
Lovely to find ano felter who likes Katerina's work. Stay safe

I purchased the feather/leaf scarf tutorial. Hope to get a chance to give it a go soon. Katerina has become one of my favorites on the viscose videos.

Prairiesky, I have purchased this combination too - amazing value! I have watched them both all through and made notes. Will try the leaf scarf first as I have hankies but not sure how long I will have to wait for the viscose fibres. Trouble is there are so many glorious colours I just can't make up my mind what to order!

I know! The colors are incredible and all are downright tempting. I am not quite sure what I will chose for my scarf, but I have been practicing with the hankies on a big panel I am making to cover my pantry doors. It’s a good place to practice and they are certainly more stubborn for me than in the video. Still, I can see how they will work and it gave me some practice on the veins which are also interesting. The effect does work, however. I have three different viscose fiber suppliers and each have a different feel. I am having to work on how to “pull lines” from the hanks. It is VERY whispy and water is a must as a helper, but I definitely have a learning curve.
