I use a mat similar to this when felting and have had readers ask me where to get one. The person who sold me mine doesn't seem to be in business any longer. Another reader, Sally S., found this mat that will work the same way. This is sold in two sizes from Acorns & Twigs. I have no connection to this seller. I'm just passing on the information. www.acornsandtwigs.com/products/rubber-friction-mat

Are you using it to roll on or to roll in?

To rub against. I don't roll anything anymore really. Maybe at the end of fulling, I will roll the piece up on itself and roll against the mat.

Just spotted this thread. I got a pair of car footwell mats from the Pound Shop for - you've guessed it - £1.00. Mind you that was several years ago, so long in fact that they've started to come apart. I'm sure that car accessory stores like Halfords (in the UK) could supply some. I have also purchased a much larger piece of ribbed floor covering, our local "department store" (https://www.hartsofstur.com/) has some sold by the metre so that I can cover a large part of my work table with it when making a larger piece of felt. Unfortunately they don't sell it on line. In addition to the cookware which can be found on their website, they sell everything and more that you'd find in an old fashioned hardware store, including floor coverings, and decorating stuff. Great for all the tools and accessories needed for craftwork (if you're able to think outside the box and adapt) but you have to go there (Sturminster Newton, Dorset, UK) to get it. Ann

I use a glass washboard, a car floor mat, and a boot tray, I just bought some nice silicone ribbed mats at the dollar store. I gave one to Jan and now I can't find the 4 I bought for myself to use in class. They will turn up when I am looking for something else.

Thank you Ann, you've just reminded me that my late sister had a glass washboard. Must chat up my brother in law! It will come in handy because the rubbing board I made by sticking flat glass "beads" on a piece of perspex is losing its beads. I've also got some clearish plastic/polyurathane carpet protector which has ridges that I use and some Ikea shelf covering for protecting glasses that's got pimples on it. That's flexible enough to roll up if I need to. My husband has covered a plasterer's wooden float trowel with some of the carpet protector which is also pretty useful. I think a hardware store is wasted on the men!

Oh yes, it is. Jan found dog washers with great nubbies and I have one of those textured face massagers. And my matts turned up. I found them looking for a bag to put some prefelt off cuts in. They are dish drain mats. They must be for someone with one small plate and a cup.
