Aarghh! It's September 3rd already. Another couple of days and the children will all be back at school.
Today I've been re-arranging my craft room and as usual I'm not totally happy with it.
I always start off with a grand re-arrangement plan, but it always ends in a compromise and I just know that in a few months time the furniture and boxes of stuff will be on the move again and that I'll be sure that this time it will all turn out right.
Anyone else suffer from 'The triumph of hope over experience'?

I suffer from that too. Every time I get a new shelf or set of draws I think it will sort the problem of so much good stuff but It never does. I fill it up and it doesn't seem to make a dent.

I just keep accumulating containers. I haven’t had the energy to sort out anything so it just sits there.

My stuff just keeps piling up. I need about 5X the space to fit everything I have now!

Bearing in mind how we all struggle with space in our houses, I thought a funny 'New Home' card that I saw at a wool show recently was very apt. It was made by an Etsy seller tillyflopdesigns The words on the front were: Good Luck in your new yarn storage facility home.

Excellent card message.
Funnily enough I’ve just been through the same thought process. I rent a tiny studio which is massively over-filled. A bigger studio recently became free and I stood in it in all its empty glory going through how wonderful if would be to move there: all my storage problems would be solved, I’d be super well organised, I’d be able to access everything with ease....and so on. At the end of this flight of fancy I knew in my heart of hearts that in fact I’d just fill I up and be in exactly the same position within a few months. In the end I didn’t have to make the decision as the studio had already been let so I was saved from having to test myself.
I’m opening my studio over 3 weekends in October as part of a local event which means I will have to reorganise the space I have. Last time I did this I thought I’d get rid of some things but just ended up buying more stacking boxes. I don’t think I can fit in any more boxes this time. Will I find a way of squeezing in more boxes or actually have to get rid of things this time? Watch this space .......(my money is on hiding some stuff in the boot / trunk of my car for a few weeks!).

Oh you have done my heart good. I thought it was me. As Ruth says I need 5 x the space. Earlier in the year I had a total re-vamp of what used to be the 'family room' - tv for our two youngest & me - they are now 30 & 29 & one has a child - so the revamp was loooooonnnnnnngggggg overdue. One sofa kicked out, new open shelves (accessible from both sides) purchased to fit under a new table set high so that I don't have to bend over (to save my back), hundreds of books (from past life) removed to charity shop etc etc. Large boxes of yarn stacked, so too boxes of fabric (for nuno), book shelves re-stocked with items, boxes of driftwood (for attention) stacked, drum carder back in it's box, etc etc etc.
Result - the table has so much stuff on it that I still have to work at my kitchen table, and trying to get around the room is like walking a tightrope with a balance pole whilst climbing over massive obstacles. EPH can't get in at all, and my couple of friends (those I’ve ashamedly shown) just shake their heads.
Me thinks another revamp is necessary....but I can't throw anything else out!!!

I think we all ought to accept that we're never going to have the perfect craft room/studio where everything is to hand (no more searching through piles of boxes), where there is a massive work-table with nothing on it except the current project, where the light is always perfect for taking photos ....... this list could go on for quite a while! However, we're a bunch of dreamers and despite the regular re-vamp disappointments, we will all keep trying for the impossible!

Love to hear everyone's stories that sound so much like my own. We end up working with what we have and making the best of it.

I would like to throw in the idea that having so much stuff [and even as a novice I am starting to buy more storage boxes] is actually a really useful part of the creative process. As I hunt for the things I want for my current project I find other things that will enhance this project or provide inspiration for another project. Alternatively, I am the queen of rationalization.

Totally agree - there is no such thing as too big a stash .... just too small a work space!

I’ve not been in the studio for a while but yesterday had a little bit of play time. I bought some lovely cork-faced fabric while on holiday and have been thinking about what to do with it. I decided to felt some bits of fungus which I will stitch on (so they are standing up) when they’re dry as if they’re growing on tree bark. Maybe then I will stitch the piece onto a stretched canvas. Depends how it looks. Has anyone else used this cork fabric? www.ipernity.com/doc/2373440/49195872
