This is a wonderful resource Lyn! I haven't used the wallpaper paste to make silk paper. I might have to try it. I do have some silk paper made up that I need to use though so perhaps this will spur me on to use it. And that pesky red dye seems to be an issue every time I use it.

Instead of wallpaper pase you can use water and sugar (dissolve 3 teaspoons of sugar in 1 deciliter of hot water). Spred viscose or silk fibers on baking paper, soka with the solution and let it dry. Peel off carefully and cut out the shapes you want.

Hmmm.... I hadn't heard of using sugar before Nada. I have used starch and then ironed. I have also used a mixture of water and fabric medium. The fabric medium makes for a thicker, stronger result. I will have to try both of these methods.

Lindsay, I think you would really like silk paper. It would be great for bird feathers and it gives a nice silk shine.

Peel off carefully and cut out the shapes you want. Presumably the sugar will also disappear during fulling. Would diluted PVA glue work do you think? I have used it before as a stiffener for crochet baskets and it's fine for that, not sure how it would behave with felt though. I'd like to use the silk paper idea to embellish clothing, so it would need to be as washable as the ground felt. Any ideas for a medium that would be suitable please? Ann |

Once the silk paper is felted in, it should be OK to hand wash. Just like any other silk embellishment.

I've used two methods mentioned above - starch then ironing between silicone sheets and Sugar & water. Both work very well.
I haven't tried Wallpaper paste. I think I’d probably Want to use cellulose powder Instead as I’m not sure if the fungicide In the wallpaper paste is detrimental long term....I often don't use things up Immediately, keeping them for a 'sometime in the future' project!
Does any one have the answer to this?

I may be wrong, but I'm quite happy to use the wallpaper paste because there's not much paste left in the silk fibres after it's drip dried and then when it's applied to the felt there is enough soapy water and then vinegar rinsing water to get rid of the paste. However, I understand that your comment referred to keeping the silk paper for future use. I have some scraps from a few years back and they seem ok. |

Fiona Duffy has been running a felting with silk paper. I think she is using commercially available papers. She mentions lokta and kozo papers she is experimenting with, in a recent post. Her class seems to use printed or painted silk paper.
