Thank you very much ladies! It was good fun and something totally different for me. Thanks to you I now have a tailor made excuse (like we need one....) to visit a lovely little sewing/fabric emporium today to source double sided interfacing and anything else I can't live without
I'll move into February now.....

Very nce, Tracey Yeah, don't use those sponge scourers on the iron when it's hot, only an idiot would do that! Something metallic and sharp is good for scraping plasticy stuff off while the iron is hot

My first choice to get the gunk off the iron was a brillo pad (a UK steel wool pad with soap that foams up when wet), and I was surprised it didn't help. My next was a cream cleanser, I always swear by that, but no it still persisted. I went to the sew shop and was informed 'interfacing is one sided', I require heat bond. So all set to have round two with my iron! Wish me luck

It's because there are different terminologies in the US and the UK for sewing supplies. Makes for difficulties communicating sometimes.

The other thing that works for cleaning irons is dryer sheets. Use them while the iron is hot but be careful not to burn your fingers. I fold them up multiple times and wipe the folded edge against the hot iron.

There seem to be many suggestions online for cleaning irons, vinegar etc. I think I will try this one - 2-1 ratio of Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and water, made into a paste, wiped on and off.

I have resorted to sand paper for cleaning the iron too Can you tell I don't really use it for clothes?
