I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this. I found this image on google and I don't know who to give credit to. I think it is awesome and I would like to know how to do it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. felted collage by JoeyBanno, on Flickr

Make a piece of prefelt that is much larger than the finished piece because you will take a lot of room for the bubbles. Then use something round like marbles, pingpong balls, rocks etc to make the bubble. You wrap the prefelt around the balls and tie off either with rubber bands or string. Then you full the piece carefully. Rub around all the balls thoroughly to get the felt to shrink down around each ball. Then you cut out the balls or leave them in, whichever you prefer. Or you can cut them out from the back if you want some open and some closed but don't want to leave the ball inside. Hope that makes sense. Try a small piece first with just a few bubbles.

Thanks Ruth, I thought it was something like that. I have seen a picture somewhere that was in the orange tones and looked like coral, but I couldn't find it. I will definitely give it a go.

That affect is so dramatic! I've seen other pieces like that and they always impress me. This technique is on my to-do list. I did make a small attempt one day, using bean-bag beans but it was so fiddly I stopped. I still have that in my stash bag and think how I'll finish it one day...
Would love to see your finished piece when you make it!

I made some of these last year and have been meaning to take them further.
Will post a photo later.

This is my effort: Made some swaledale prefelt, then stitched some rough circles using a strong linen thread, inserted some felted 'lumps', gathered up the stitching and tied it off. Soaked it all in boiling water and vinegar, then shocked with cold water. Patted out excess water with a towel, then went on holiday leaving it to dry. On return I removed the stitching and put it away until today! I'd like to take it further. May try it again with layers of colour, then cut and reveal, or perhaps leave some small glass resists poking out. The possibilities are endless - but the time to do it is so short!

You don't have the BB code on your pictures, Judith, I don't know if it's disabled? I chose the medium 500 size, right clicked, chose Properties, copied the URL then pasted and highlighted, then clicked the image button. It's all in the FAQs on the home page, I hope I remembered it right

It is a lot of work to do this. It takes way more fabric to do than you think it will. I like the felt balls better than something hard. It was much easier to work with and get around to felt it. Judith to speed up the drying spin it out in a salad spinner. It works great for smaller pieces.

Karen did some a while ago with different colours, using foil balls, I think then cutting open, they looked really nice. I did a very subtle one years ago, just pressing and shaping the felt over glass beads, it's funny that it's one photo I decided not to post with my texture pics.

Judith that looks really great, i did have a go making a sort of flower like this using a rolled up peice of foil and laying fibre on top, so no stitching lol it worked pretty good and i should try again !

I've just bought some of those teeny tiny elastic bands - used for hair braiding, and think I might use these next time. Perhaps less time consuming than sewing! As you all know, I'm a lazy lump, impatient too!
