Well what fun this was, not lol I was trying to make some silk paper using mulberry silk, silk throwsters waste, silk rods and hot fix angelina, i layed the mulberry silk first and then added the rest, topping off with a fine layer of the mulberry, well nothing stuck to the mulberry and check out how much the dye ran, i ironed for a lot longer than it needed but still nothing worked and it kept moving around, is it the mulberry silk that you cant make paper out of or did i do something else wrong, i'll keep trying with different silk fibres to see if the next one works !!!! And i hope these pics work to, not having a good start to my day lol Silk Paper gone wrong by FeltingFever, on Flickr Silk paper gone wrong by FeltingFever, on Flickr

I have always used textile medium or spray starch to make silk paper. Pam used a method that included using water soluble stabilizer. You need to have the gummy silk to do it without other glues. So degummed silk doesn't hold together.

I fixed the photos for you, Kaz The two that worked out look really good. I keep meaning to try silk paper, I've got so many fibres I want to try it with. I've only seen the spray starch and ironing method and the making a paste and netting a a screen method and have never seen a decent tutorial anywhere, so if anyone feels like making one, that would be good We could put a PDF on the studio site too if anyone really does feel like doing one? I really like the way your 'gone wrong' ones look, Kaz, how did you do them?

Can't offer any advice I'm afraid. There are so many things to try that life is just too short to fit them all in! :0)
At least we try!

Karen, I posted my step-by-step pictures of what I do with the water-soluable stabilizer in the Other section. I don't know if that will help you, though.

Thanks Ruth, when i used just the straight silk rods that i dyed a while ago they seem to always work fine with the ironing, and the other one i did with added angelina worked fine to, i am going to get some textile medium today ( if she has any) and try again with lots of other silks Thanks for fixing the pics zed and for the comments, i used the iron method from beautiful silks website but of course it didnt work, i layered the different silks together and gave them a water spray and then ironed, they were suppose to hold together according to the video lol Judith yes at least we do try lol Thanks Pam i'off to check that again, i did forget you put one up so i need some of the stabalizer to then lol

I guess I'll put that on my lists of things to get done Zed. My first project starting in fiber arts was silk paper. It's gorgeous stuff and you can use it like cloth or paper.

I saw a couple of videos that Kaz linked to on flickr and a couple in 'related', but I'm not sure that the ones I saw would work with felt, they looked far too thick. I saw something years ago where someone layed down netting, 2 layers of silk tops, netting, then wallpaper paste type stuff, it could be cut and used with felt. I haven't seen anything similar since.

Zed - I used that method to make silk paper, but I didn't try to use it with my felt. Don't know why, just got forgotten about I suppose. The method is very easy (but a little smelly). I got it from a book called 'Handmade Silk Paper' by Kath Russon (it's a Search Press book still in print).

Oh i made some more this afternoon and it worked really well, I used the textile medium and it was so easy but being the pessimist that i am lol i didnt think it would work properly so didnt take any pics, i'll rectify that shortly to show how i did it and what todays paper looks like, i love it and although this first lot is quite fine its really pretty strong to.

I used silk paper with felt by using spray starch. It felted right in easily and was similar to nuno.

Thanks for that, Lyn Isn't that typical, Kaz I think I'll try the starch one first then, Ruth. I did have a quick look around today and saw someone say they used spray starch, then they said they made their own solution with the powdered stuff and hot water, as if we're all meant to know what that is. Anyone know?

I'm not sure if they sell powdered starch in the US. Of course, I never looked for it. I just buy canned starch as it's easier.

I wonder if a fabric stiffener would work to, and if some use wall paper paste then a pva glue should work to maybe
