I bought the double brim hat tutorial, but haven't had time to start it. I'll be interested to see what you do with all of them Madeleine. Have fun!

Unfortunately the same here Marilyn, so it will take some time to start with the doublebrim hat. I have so many other projects waiting in line. First I want to make some Concertina hats for the Teri Berry lessons. The first hat I messed up so I have to find out what to make of it now. I also have to create and write some felting projects for next week for volunteers in nature education that teach the children who visit the center of education. But I have to do the projects first for myself because I never felted with this type of wool.It is rather coarse and does not felt well. There is also a template with wet wool between plastic sheets waiting for 1 week to be felted into a tunic. And I have to prepare a project to make a lamp with some felting friends next week. My heart starts beating faster when I think of all the things I have to do this week!

Wow, you are busy Madeleine! I still haven't completed my third hat for Teri's class. That will be a while since we'll be traveling for the holidays. Have fun with your projects!

I didn't like mine first hat too, so I soaked it again in the water, streched it, turned it inside-out. Now I make some flowers to chear it up. I 'll send a pic when I am ready. The snailhat have to waith. What kind of wool are you talking about, the merino? Wich center of ecucation do you mean ? However I am retired, I always feel attracted to education.(Have done so for 37 years).

I've learned through experience that different ways of laying wool can make a big difference in the final product. I found this video on the Internet where a woman is demonstrating how different layouts will affect the final shape of a hat Even though it is in Russian, you will see the drawings which somehow clearly explain this. I hope you find it useful. Hi Nada, I saw that video also and I saw those hats coming by on Facebook . She added me to her site, so I can see some projects

In Bergen aan Zee you have beautiful landscape of sea, beaches, woods and dunes, and there you can find "De Schaapskooi". www.schaapskooi-bergen.nl/de-kooi/The construction of the sheepfold is a project of PWN. PWN ( responsible for provincial drinking water purification in the dunes) cooperates with Foundation Sheepfold Mountain, IVN (the Association for nature and environment), European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, Municipality of Bergen and the shepherd. The building was designed by architect Piet Tauber. He created an organically designed and accessible building from light, sand-colored stone with dark windows and a sloping sedum roof. The solar panels on the roof are sponsored by the municipality of Bergen, who is happy with the arrival of the sheepfold. To promote the sheep breed: "Kempisch heideschaap" the shepherdess, IVN and the volunteers organise a lot of activities. We may use the building on wednesdays for knitting, spinning, weaving and felting and in return we give information to the visitors and we volunteer with the yearly shearing festival and other educational activities. It is a pleasure to work in that organic building, in that beautiful landscape, sheep all around us and so quiet and peaceful. The other volunteers and visitors are very eager to learn about wool and what you can do with it. In de Schaapskooi are also a drumcarder, spinning wheels, 2 knitting machines and a big loom so everyone who is interested can learn how to use them.

Hi there, Haven't posted much recently as a return to work has reduced my felting activity. However, still doing it when I can. I managed to produce a fedora hat using a hat shapers hat block and was quite pleased with this. I was wanting to try the double brimmed method of Irina Spasskaya and so purchased her online course. It's pretty good and clear but...I've tried two hats now and not having a lot of success. The main issue is that however small i make the diameter for my head size (which gives this design of hat its stability I think), it seems to be ending up too big for my head. I'm still working on the second one as hoping i can felt it narrower! I liked my design for this so hoping to save it and just thinking that I'm not committing enough time to working it perhaps. Any thoughts, ideas, relevant and/or similar experiences welcomed!

Can you rewet and full it longer to help shrink it more? Did you use Merino? I bought the class but never used it. The double brim hat is lovely. Please post pics when you can. Good luck!

Hi - thanks for your response. Was thinking this might be the way forward but I now wondering if the issue might go back to an early post about layout and the impact this has on shape. The hole has got much larger since I've been trying to felt it more so clearly shrinkage isn't occurring in the way that I would like it to. such a shame but it's all learnin' just not sure what!! I'll post a picture when I've reminded myself again how to do this! Yes I love the those hats, they are so elegant.

I don't know the tutorial but as a rule hole get bigger. I know that when you make a burette the starting hole is on about2.5 inches across. felt will also shrink in the direction of felting. You need to roll or rub it in the direction you want the felt to get smaller.
