I've learned through experience that different ways of laying wool can make a big difference in the final product. I found this video on the Internet where a woman is demonstrating how different layouts will affect the final shape of a hat Even though it is in Russian, you will see the drawings which somehow clearly explain this. I hope you find it useful.

The drawings were easy to understand (in full screen). Her hats are beautiful and I was a bit concerned when she screwed one up in her demonstration!

Didn't have time to watch the entire video but that's a good explanation with the drawings.

Very interesting Nada, She certtainly sounds like a Lecturer who both knows and shares her subject well. I copied all her drawings down.I particularly like the frilly edge design - must try it!!

Great video Nada, thank you for posting.
Am I correct in thinking that she lays out the wool on only one side of the resist she was holding up and uses the directionality of the wool layout to create the dome shape?

Thanks Nada, it's a good video, though for some reason, my settings won't allow me to use full screen for this, but I think I get the idea.
Similar principle to the layout for bust and waist shaping in vests or jackets.

Judith if you click where it says from youtube it takes you away( pinterest I think) and you can then go full screen. it wouldn't do it here for me either.

Now I've managed to get it onto full screen (thanks Ann), I can appreciate what she's demonstrating - well almost. I didn't fully understand the layout of the other side of the resist.

Judith I think for some of them it are not for a hat. For instance when she is showing the cone shaped one she is obviously talking about for a top and the place where your bust would be. At least form the hand gestures she is making. I have made a bowl form a flat circle of felt by needling along the edge around and around.

I bought this video tutorial at Felting School online. They videorecord interesting russian masterclasses and add english translation and pdf. I am very enthusiastic about these tutorials. The mentioned tutorial is about wetfelting a doublebrim hat where you use a round template and lay out the wool on both sides. One side for the crown and a small part of the brim and the other side for the double brim. She uses a specific layout to form the hat and claims the hat stays soft and does not need stiffening. I already own their light object video and making a jacket and learned a lot.
