I bought 4-5 kg of alpacka fibres from a lady that does not use the fibres herself. She said is was the best parts, so I am assuming the back and sides, but it does take time to pick out all the bits of hay... My first attempt was with too thin layer of fibres, and the bubblewrap made holes in the felt. It worked better with thicker layers and I guess it is easy to underestimate the amount of such fine fibres. I will give it another go, but will probably card most of it into batts together with sheep´s wool, to add both softness and nice brown shades.

I use my second fibers for felting. But, it is prepped before using. I wash it and run through my carder. If just wet felting, then I use at least 4 layers if not more, depending on the project. Yes, batts can make alpaca felt a little easier.

Hi Natalie, Yes I like it a lot. It saves my arms and back since I truly do not have a good setup in the basement for felting on a table. I use it for just making felt too for my alpaca fedora hats. I purchased it from Jill Chadeck at merino and mulberry. I believe she is a member here. Check out her webpage for a video of it.

Mixing fine merino (30%) with alpaca helps with felting. I have used merino prefelt cover with alpaca too.

Natalie, there are benefits to the felting machines. I had back surgery three years ago and it enabled me to keep felting. I don't use it much anymore. I imagine if you do a lot of big projects or multiple projects At once you'd find it helpful.

Now that's a roller felting machine Ann.
If I am doing Nuno felted scarves, I can do three at the same time in my machine.
