Hello everyone, I'm making some holiday ornaments for the first time for an upcoming local craft show. I started making round ornaments using foam inside, but want to know if there is something more environmental friendly to use. Has anyone ever used newspaper inside a round ball to help get the shape? . THANKS

I haven't used anything but either wool or foam. I imagine paper would be likely to mold unless it was coated with some type of acrylic. I also doubt it would hold up during the wet felting process. Not sure about needle felting. Perhaps someone else has more to offer from experience.

I have used plastic practice golf balls (whiffle balls) and they work great because they are hollow. But they are plastic so that probably isn't very environmentally friendly.
How about scrap wool from cut offs from fulled wool sweaters or the like?

thanks Ladies,
I am also using some of my scrap wools from knitting projects for the smaller ornaments. I can make them larger, but it would take a lot more yarn for a 3" ball. For the smaller ornaments the yarns work well. I will have to try some more experiments to see what holds up the best. thanks,

I think using foam is environmentally friendly, since it can't be recycled etc like paper and plastic, and won't be going into landfill if it's inside one of your lovely decorations

I know someone who uses polyester fiber fill for the bulk of her ornaments. She just uses wool on the outside. She is needle felting. for laundry balls I used scrap felt in the middle and then wrap wool around that.

How about making them on a balloon - you can purchase small size balloons - make the balloon about 1/4 to 1/2 larger than you want the ornament to be then it is almost felted let air out of the balloon and felt some more or use the washer dryer method. You will have a tiny hole. This is how I felt on a balloon shadyrr.wordpress.com/2015/07/04/bowl-on-a-ball-washerdryer-felting/
