BFpurse by pamd8, on Flickr BFpurse-closeup by pamd8, on Flickr I know you are all thinking I am crazy to spend all the hours making this, but.....I actually love it! The big butterfly is actually a small pocket. I am naming the purse "moths to the flames". The initial idea/plan was to make looking through a forest at sunset. However, I am nothing if not able to adjust my expectations, so.....a forest fire, then. And what is more natural than moths flying towards flames. The largest moth/butterfly I made was mostly light green felt, thinking that would work against the background. I didn't like it that much, so added some brown wool and needle-felted it in appropriate areas. Then I hand-embroidered the rest of it. Even after all that, I still didn't like it up against the purse. So, I made two smaller moths in more coordinating colors, mostly using machine embroidery, but with added hand-embroidery. The top one I tried a new technique I read about using the ziz-zag stitch and free-motion embroidery. I liked the way that turned out and hand-embroidered on top of that. The bodies, of course, are needle-felted. Attaching the moths to the purse was problematic and I honestly think I would have been better machine sewing them to a flat piece of felt and then making the purse. So, that's it!

I think if you're having fun, spending a lot of time is not the issue. I love how the bag turned out and the moths are wonderful. Looks like you're getting good at the machine embroidery

What a fabulous bag - the moths are fantastic! Really good idea to make a pocket of the largest one. Works that evolve are so satisfying, and when you finish, and you are very pleased with it, there is such a sense of achievement. Who cares how long it took?
