Last year the nuno felt background for this piece was made from some charity shop open weave material laid atop sea-colour merino wool tops. It was very pretty but it got forgotten about until recently. It's 26"x 14" so it's big enough for a wall picture. Some scraps of felt left over from other projects were cut to shape to make this weedy sea dragon - he was put together like a jig-saw really - the bits were all needle felted into place. The only extras were a few inches of yarn to make the ribs, a few stitches to enhance the fin, a wisp or two of wool scraped from the carder and the dots on the face and torso were made with a marker pen.
The felt really is this bright colour - the only thing done to the image was cropping. Weedy Sea Dragons are close relatives to Sea Horses and they are beautiful.

That looks great, the charity shop fabric must have been unusual I like weedy sea dragons too

Hello Zed - the fabric was very delicate and it looked like a very fine fishing net with thin stripes of silk thread running its width. The felting made the coloured threads wavy which is handy for a sea scene! The only trouble with buying fabric in charity shops is that the supply is limited! I can't get anymore of it and I'd love to be able to do so.

Its great. He looks like he poped out of a childrens story. The orange and yellow give the water more depth.

Oh my! That is beautiful, and I agree he could have come from a child's story book! I had never heard of weedy sea dragons until now either.

He's a real cutey! I'd not heard of weedy sea dragons either, but I googled it and presto, yes, there were some of his very close relatives!

I just googled it and it's a real creature, I thought it was a made up creature, very cool

Don't worry Ann, it's quite new to me too! There is also a leafy sea dragon which is very different.
But this is the year of the dragon and as 'rosiepink' favours things to do with the sea, a sea dragon seemed appropriate.

I like it because it is realistic, yet has a fantasy feeling to it.
