Haven't ever uses fabric softeners with wool. Mainly because I am allergic to most fabric softeners.

I just put white vinegar in the final rinse to remove any residual alkali from the soap. No odour from the vinegar once it's dry.
I also use it as a household cleaner it takes care of limescale deposits and is good for cleaning windows amongst many other things.
I don't like the synthetic smell of room and upholstery fresheners so I make my own with 1:4 white vinegar and water, add a few drops of essential oil (an optional splash of ethanol helps the oils to disperse). Put it all in a spray bottle. Last for ages and it's cheap.

Like Koffipot I use a vinegar rinse at the end. I do have Eucalan and have used it once or twice and didn't notice a big difference.

I use vinegar, however with silk scarves I like to use softeners for final rinse. They smell so nice then.

I have try eucalan for the first time and I noticed a difference in the shine and softness of the wool. I would not say it is an essential but I will continue to use it now that I have tried it and saw the result.

Hi Teri! No I did not because they are alpaca skeins to sale for knitting purpose not for felting. I personally would not use eucalan before felting because you would take off the nice finish and feel of it when you would wet you piece with soapy water. For felting I would use it at the final stage of felting before drying my piece. But I will sure try that next time I felt something I thing it is worth it.

Hi Zed I do rinse with water only all the time also. Eucalan is so very optional (final step), really. I do not say it is a necessity. But once you have tried it you might like it a lot. If you want to know more about it, I encourage you to read on their web site the description of the product and the testimonial part too. www.eucalan.com/
