Hello ladies! I would like to know if it is essential to soak wool ( alpaca in my case) in syntrapol prior to dyeing or I can just soak in a bit a dish soap and water or/and vinegar. So far my result are great with the syntrapol but it is a bit expensive to order from the states right now with the money exchange and delivery to Canada.

I use synthropol and have had a small container for several years. You only need a few drops. Here is an explanation by Paula Birch. I'm sure many others only use a mild detergent. www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/synthrapol.shtml

You can substitute with mild detergent.

Yes, I use about 1/2 cup of vinegar to a couple of gallons of water plus a few drops of mild detergent. The detergent acts as a wetting agent helping the fleece to soak up the water/vinegar mixture.

I use dish soap. I never put vinegar in the soak water. I had never heard of doing that until a couple of years ago.
