My name is Sarah and I live in South Wales, UK with my ever patient OH and our little girl, 3 ponies and 2 cats. I recently discovered needle felting through a natural parenting forum and I was intrigued! Since then I have ordered a few bits n bobs online and had a go I don't get as much opportunity as I would like to needle felt as I am caring for our little one who has special needs (she was born prematurely) but the moments I am able to snatch here and there help me to take a break mentally Anyway I have attached a photo of my first flat felt picture, I still have quite a bit of work to do as you can see! I'm looking forward to learning lots and probably asking loads of questions ;D Sarah x x

Hi, thank you for the welcome I'm glad you like my fox, I've still got the moon and sky to do but I'll get there eventually Taliah is 2y8m, she has global developmental delays and has vision problems but she is a real character, very bright and making progress every day so we are happy We have some tough moments and I sometimes struggle with the weight of it all but Taliah is just perfect and such a delight. I'm really enjoying looking round the threads and checking out the links. Maybe some day I'll get to try out wet felting too! I did crochet a purse once and felted it but it was by no means perfect

Hello Sarah and welcome to the forum.
I think the fox is lovely. I especially like the eye and the attitude of the head and ears. I'd love to see the finished picture.
Needle felting is great because it's quick and easy to pick up and put down - in your current situation that's essential isn't it? It's good that you have this diversion to enjoy.

I'm glad you're enjoying the forum. And yeah, you should try wet felting too. I usually lay my projects out one day and felt them another, a piece can be felted in less than half an hour. It's nice for doing your own backgrounds for needlefelting too. There's a few members here who do wet felting with kids, some who are really young, maybe you can get Taliah into it one day, too

Thank you for your lovely welcome and comments ;D I've managed to make a start on the sky, and funny you should say that Zed as Taliah wanted to 'help' so we did a bit with the felting punch much to her delight. She had fun and it was great practise for her fine and gross motor skills! I am currently using pure wool felt for my background but its only thin stuff. Still, it will do for practise. Wet felting my own backgrounds sounds really tempting...think I'll have a nose online ans see if I can find a mat I am so excited to see my picture forming!! I can't believe its taken me so long to discover felting!

Hello Sarah. I am pretty new to this list also. I have only done needlefelting and do not know that much about wools and yarns and techniques for felting. I bought an embellisher for a low price and practice with it on very small projects. Your fox looks like a very good start to something great. Keep reading and posting and ask questions.

I don't think it really matters what you use for the background as long as it works for you I don't needlefelt often, but have used my own felt and acrylic craft felt. I know some people use old fleece jumpers or woollen jumpers. Did you mean a mat for felting? A bamboo one? Ikea do small ones for about 50p. I use a rubber mat from Poundland
