Three years ago I dyed my first piece of silk and roving. I had gotten a package of idye on clearance at one of the craft stores. I had no clue about dyes, but contacted Jacquard who walked me through and explained the difference. I made a solution from the package and kept it in a mason jar. I pulled it out last week to dye some more silk for an upcoming project. I looked at the date and wondered if I was going to waste the silk and roving I had to dye.
No worries, it dyed the silk and roving beautifully. I now understand the difference between a union dye, acid and procion. I know procion dyes don't keep, so I wasn't sure this union dye would last this long. I was pleased with my success. Stay tuned for my project. :-)

well that was good luck Marilyn. I bet they fiber reactive was gone and the acid did both. I have kept acid dy made u along time. I even froze some accidently once. Silk is great that way.

I've left acid dyes on top of a cupboard for over a year and just added a bit of water and vinegar and they still worked fine. You should do a post, Marilyn, I'd love to know more.

I've only had one of the acid mixtures go bad, most of mine have been on shelves for a couple of years.
I got the exact same color as the original silk with this Idye mixture. That's what I was so surprised at.
I wonder if you froze procion if it would still work.
Ann, did the frozen mix still work? Zed, I may do that. Thanks.

Marilyn, that’s terrific that your dye held its strength! I have never used Idye but will add that to my list. I have seen them in the craft stores but did not know anything about them. I’ve enjoyed working with acid dyes, which seem to work well with little fuss.
Thanks for sharing your dyeing experience.

Hi yes the frozen dye worked fine. it was just dye and water. I put the acid in the pot not the dye solution The colour should be the same the silk will take either dye. I don't know if the freezing it would stop the reaction.

I'm still using acid dye solutions I've had for about four years - they're fine so far but I have noticed when mixing old blues with newer green, the green seems to dominate - but perhaps it would anyway? Don't know enough about dyes to know!
