Hi everyone! As some of you may know, I was given an incredible opportunity with Dyeing House Gallery this past winter. They chose me to be their first "artist collaborator" for a new program they are starting. DHG sent me 3 kilos(!!!)of Maori/Bergschaf blend wool to experiment with. I made 4 sculptures with it but have a lot of it left over. So in celebration of the interview they posted today I am giving away two 8oz lots of wool. One on Instagram.com/Yesthisisshana and one on Facebook.com/shanakohnstammThanks everyone! Hope you'll share in my excitement! ~Shana

Shana, feel free to promote your work without shame. It's awe-inspiring! The interview was very good. I had to look up The Fifth Element - never heard of it!

Congratulations, Shana, inspiring work. I do wish they had included more photos along with the interview - are there some for us to see anywhere else?

What a lovely photo of you at the head of interview - and a very interesting read! Thank you for posting the link.

Congratulations, I hadn't known about you being an artist collaborator I've never heard of Maori sheep/wool.

Zed, Opulent Fibers in Portland, OR, used to carry Maori wool; in fact, I purchased some from them a few years ago. I don’t remember the actual sheep source, but it was very similar to most medium coarse fibers, in my opinion--more suitable for wet-felting bags or slippers, or needle-felting.

Shana refers to the bright colors of Maori in her interview. Here is an example of my use of Maori--I think this was called “lagoon.” It was my first clutch bag, inspired by Marilyn’s cosmetic cases. Clutch Bag with Flap by catwycliff, on Flickr

Congratulations, I hadn't known about you being an artist collaborator I've never heard of Maori sheep/wool. "Maori" is their name for a blend of what I believe is Coopworth and Corriedale. Now, whether that's a breed blend or a wool blend, I have no idea DHG shared a few names of their upcoming artists with me and I am quite honored to be in their company!

This one is my favorite, though I was cursing at it most of the time. The rest can be found on my website. They are "Flocculent Succulent", "Pillowed", and "Florapod". This is "Santuario".

Opulent currently sells the coop/corrie blend in batts, and they are great to work with--again, they are medium coarse fibers. Shana, I wonder if Opulent got any flak about calling their wool “Maori,” which is actually an indigenous culture of New Zealand.
I like your pod…did you wet-felt the pod, or should I not be asking that of a needle-felter? I sometimes combine the two processes.

Opulent Fibers is not working with DHG anymore, but New England Felting Supply is. (The Maori moniker is a DHG invention and I personally have heard complaints about the choice.) AND DHG is now offering direct to customer pricing!! *I got my wool from Italy in 3 days! Believe it or not, these are all wet-felted! "Pillowed" and "Flocculent Succulent" had wet-felted components added onto a needle-felted base. "Santuario" and "Florapod" are hollow-formed over resist. I constantly use both techniques to get the desired effect, though I curse more when I'm wet-felting. Thanks to everyone who liked & followed my other accounts! Giveaway ends tomorrow midday.

Thanks for the information about DHG, and also about your own felting processes. I smiled about your “curse more when…wet-felting.” For me it’s the opposite, I curse more when I needle-felt because of broken needles or pricked fingers. ;-)
