My yardstick (what do you call it in England) and I are constantly at war. I stand it up and it falls down or I cannot locate it. Years ago I made a yardstick holder for my Mom and had been using it but the yardstick broke and the new one was too wide to fit in to it. I try to have a specific place for all my tools. As long as I was felting I decided to see how well different fibers would felt to the dark blue Merino I was using as a base and also to see the texture I would get. Red “Hemp” this was the easiest to felt in. Yellow “Tussah Silk” added some yellow wool (least favorite) Green “Bamboo” – Hard to felt had to add some green wool. Red “Ramie” felted in without too much rubbing Yellow “Silk Hankie” added yellow wool Red “Bamboo” hard to felt added blue around the edges Red “Cheesecloth” Not being sure how the mixed color side would look I used some roving of unknown type on the other side which you can see on the edges of the mixed color side. Felted Mom's Red Bamboo Green Bamboo Silk Hankie and Ramie

Red Hemp Red Bamboo Tussah Other Side Some of the fibers look like they are not attached but they are where the fiber meets the roving. I just put the fibers on thickly to see what results I would get. Did not get it perfectly squared up but the little curves gives it character.

Cool idea for the stick holder and a great idea for experimenting with different fibers!

A good way to do some fibre sampling and have a useful item to boot. We call them yardsticks here in UK too, though these days they are more often metresticks!

I seem to remember some teachers starting to use 'metre rule' at school, but yardstick is still most common, I think.
I like the effects you got with the fibres, I like the red hemp and green bamboo.

Great job Francis. A great way to make samples hanging on your wall everyday. if you want to square it up you can steam it and bock it.
