I doubt I could needle felt a life-like dog, so I chose to make something easier with dog fur I was given by a friend (who shaves her Akita every spring). A family of rodents, a bit like fat lemmings perhaps? The dog owner was thrilled with them. My cats would have been happy to play with them too. ;-)

Zara I love that! I have a white poodle type dog & she has to be shorn several times a year. I've wondered about felting with her fur but can't decide if it is weird & creepy! What would I make? I don't want a scarf to match my dog! A great idea to felt balls first. Anyone else tried dogfelt?!

I also made a necklace from the same dog hair. I wouldn't wear it myself - not very soft and quite itchy! But the dog owner loved it - that dog means everything to her. Perhaps I need a sheepswool necklace instead. Made with lambswool from my own sheep...? ;-)

Love the lemmings. I had some products made from dog hair in the store a long time ago. They made me sneeze and most people thought they were creepy. So for particular dog owners yes, for the general public, I have my doubts. Zara - I do think you need a wool bead necklace

I applaud you for making the lemmings and although I have never seen a real lemming, they do look adorable!

So for particular dog owners yes, for the general public, I have my doubts. Zara - I do think you need a wool bead necklace I totally agree with you Ruth. Quite a few people seem to perceive dog hair as something dirty. A bit strange as sheep can get very dirty too - especially white ones... ;-) And dog hair can be washed, the same as sheeps wool. But dog hair products are not likely to attract the general public. At a crafts market, here where I live, there was a women selling things made out of human hair. It is a very old tradition that is passed on exclusively within a village in mid-Sweden. Fascinating. She makes beautiful stuff (bridal crowns, necklaces etc), and actually makes a living from it, but a lot of people just felt it was wrong somehow. And I must say, the knickers she had knitted from human hair felt weired even to me. ;-) She doesn't have a website complete yet, but I found a blog where someone had posted photos of her crafts. Link below, and then you need to scroll down until you see the knickers. ottiliasveranda.blogspot.se/2008/09/himmelen-fr-en-kvinna-womans-heaven.html

OMG - I wonder how many knickers she sells??? Not too sure about the human hair thing. We have pretty popular key chains made from braided horse hair here in Montana. That seems OK to tourists

Zara, the lemmings are adorable. I used to keep dog hair to mix into paper for texture. I don't understand why sheep should be any different than dogs as far as using the fur. The necklace indeed would be a great keepsake for the owner.
Human hair, yes, I find that a little weird.

The lemmings are very cute. Human hair made into jewelry keepsakes if a very old craft. the underwear is just wrong. I have a friend that makes part of her income for doing custom spinning of dog and cat hair. and a lady that used to come to our guild show would knit cat toy mice out of dog fur.

They're great, Zara! I didn't know lemmings looked like that The human hair knickers are a bit odd, but the jewellery is amazing. I don't understand why people think using dog hair is creepy especially for needle felting, but then when I see the hair I saved from my kids' first hair cuts, it creeps me out!
