I've come across this interesting method (haven't tried it yet) - using bleach for dyeing. She suggests using natural fibres (cotton, linen, rayon), while silk is not mentioned. I think it shoudl work as well. We have a large cypress fence around hte house and may give it a go once when I have more time. Have you used anything similar? www.threadsmagazine.com/item/3720/dyeing-with-bleach/page/all

I haven't used bleach to remove colour but I have used the colour remover dharma sells. I used it on a purple wool and silk cobweb wrap and it went really orange. It worked on both the silk and the wool. Bleach and protein fibers do not go well together. the patterns she got were really cool. It would be interesting to try it with fiber reactive dye in the spray bottle too

Yes! I'd forgotten all about it, but years ago I did a couple of tee shirts like this When I was into photography and had a darkroom, I used to love doing Photograms, which is a similar thing, but using light on photographic paper. I like her conifer pattern.

My local surface design group did this last month. I did a post about it on my blog permutationsinfiber.wordpress.com/2014/09/19/back-to-business-as-usual/If you want to discharge silk, you need to buy a discharge paste made specifically for silk and wool. You still need a "bleach stop" chemical to stop the process. If you leave the chemicals on the fabric (they won't come off with just regular water) they will destroy the fiber. You should do this outside or in a well ventilated space. The fumes are bad. This is a photo of a couple of silk scarves that I discharged. The orange one was done with a silk screen and has a very organic pattern that is a little hard to see.

You can get great effects on photos with bleach the same way, or using a paintbrush

Ruth, thanks for your warning. I don't think I can get a bleach stopper here anywhere so I'll probably not mess up with bleach and silk.
